Happy New Year (we are a bit late due to furlough)!
The National Park Service is pleased to announce the recent certification of Davidson, North Carolina as a Certified Local Government (CLG) brings the total number of communities participating in the Federal Historic Preservation Program to over 2,000! The National Park Service designated over 30 communities from across the United States as Certified Local Governments (CLG) in 2018.
Located in North Carolina's Piedmont, the Town of Davidson was founded by farmers with Scotch-Irish roots in a region traditionally occupied by a number of tribes. Today, the town is also home to Davidson College, created in 1837 by the Presbyterian Church. Golden State Warriors superstar Stephen Curry put Davidson on the map when he played basketball for Davidson College before turning professional. The Town of Davidson is the Environmental Protection Agency’s 2004 Smart Growth Award Winner for Overall Excellence in town planning and design and the 2013 winner of the North Carolina Chapter of the American Planning Association’s “Great Main Street” award. Davidson believes in sustainable growth, substantial open space, historic preservation, racial and socioeconomic diversity, environmental stewardship, and promoting the health and wellness of all of our citizens.
We invite our local and state partners to share CLG success stories from across the country this year using the hashtag . We know we will see some great examples of the amazing local preservation work accomplished in CLGs throughout the country!

Great Davidson College history!
Today we celebrate 123 years of the first ever x-ray pictures captured in America, taking place in Dr. Henry Louis Smith’s lab, a Davidson College physics professor.
A year later, 10-year-old, Ellen Harris’ life was in peril after swallowing a tailor’s thimble. Dr. Smith came to Ellen’s aid by wagon with his x-ray equipment. https://bit.ly/2RIZUzP
