Davidson College Dean Rusk International Studies Program The Dean Rusk International Studies Program is serving as a mechanism for expanding internationalism across the Davidson College experience.

The Dean Rusk Program embodies Davidson's belief that knowledge of other cultures and of the social, economic, political, and scientific forces that shape our world are integral to a liberal arts education. Incorporating the offices of study abroad, the international student advisor, and a grants and programming staff, the Dean Rusk Program works to give a global dimension to every student's education. In cooperation with other organizations, the program also serves as a catalyst for international education in the greater Charlotte area.

While the topic of the September 29th visit by Russian American author and NY Times op-ed columnist M. Gessen was autocracy, many of the biggest lessons involved writing. Gessen writes their columns with pen and paper. They teach a weeklong intensive course on ‘writing as thinking.’

Fellow journalist Elena Kostyuchenko, the James K. Batten Professor of Russian Studies, joined Gessen for a public event. The two recalled the growth of autocracy in Russia where the government’s decrees in black and white ink sparred with reporting by journalists.

From a shared stage in the United States, their message: read and write carefully to be guardians of democracy. 🗳️

Thank you to everyone who attended and thank you to the students, faculty, and community members for your wonderful questions during the Q&A segment of the event! 🌎

Among the many grants the Dean Rusk Program is able to offer Davidson students, the Keller one is unique because it combines a global high-impact learning experience with a deeply local tie to Davidson – through faculty, students and the Kellers who remain connected through their love for Stephen Keller.

This visit to Davidson has cemented the networks for a new generation as George and Katherine Alice Keller connected with Keller Fellows: Sebastian Macaire, Silas Garrett, Abigail Pyzynosch and Maggie Matuszak.

Swipe to see a glimpse into their visit from a brief meeting with President Doug Hicks, browsing through the archives on their father’s time at Davidson College, to a brief panel on the experiences of the most recent cohort of Keller Fellows.

The Dean Rusk International Studies Program thanks everyone who helped make this visit possible and so special: George & Katherine Alice Keller; the Keller Fellows, Pres. Doug Hicks, Dr. Scott Denham, Dan Drayer, Jon Morris, Mary Elizabeth DeAngelis, and the Archives & Special Collections Team over at the E.H. Little Library.
