Surveillance pricing—the practice of using your personal data to set the highest price you’ll tolerate for everything from a plane ticket to a washing machine—is becoming more common.

Higher ed has its own version of this problem: the final cost of tuition is determined case-by-case, family by family, with no way to know whether your number is fair or how it compares to what others in similar circumstances are paying.

The fix isn't just clearer individual offers. It's letting families see what everyone else is actually paying, because a price only means something when you can compare it to others.

That's the difference between pricing clarity and transparency. By enabling families to share their financial aid award letters, TuitionFit is helping them identify the college option that aligns with their financial situation and best supports their student’s future.

We all know the big names in the college market. It’s a huge source of pride for students and their families to say they got into one of the Ivies or a renowned research institution. And rightly so.

The problem is that without market transparency, colleges don't have to compete on value. Instead, they compete on prestige.

When families can't see what others are actually paying, they can't reward the schools offering the best deal for the outcome. So they chase brand names instead, and well-resourced institutions attract more applicants while schools that often offer better value see declining enrollment.

This is the unseen cost of pricing opacity: it doesn't just confuse consumers, it distorts the entire market.

Transparency isn't just a nice thing for families. It's the mechanism that makes colleges compete on what actually matters: a quality education at a price that they can afford.

The college search typically begins nine or more months before application deadlines. Most families spend that entire period without knowing what they'll actually pay.

Instead, they narrow their list based on sticker price, prestige, or a gut feeling because they won’t know the actual number until they get a financial aid letter.

Pricing clarity doesn’t solve anything when families don’t know the actual cost until it’s too late. They deserve to see the bigger picture before they've made their choices, not after.

When you buy a car or a house, you can research what average prices are for a particular model or similar home in your area and feel confident going into a negotiation.

The same isn’t true for college costs. While steps have been taken toward developing more pricing clarity in higher education—such as net price calculators, clearer aid offer letters, and required reporting by income bracket—those only tell a family what one college will charge them. They don’t say whether that price is a good deal.

A single price point by itself is just a fact. A price point provided within the context of market-wide pricing data empowers agency, confidence, and action.
That’s the gap we’re is trying to close.

Decades of confusion and opacity around college pricing have turned many away from higher education altogether, even though for most there are still options well within their financial reach.

People tend to choose certainty over uncertainty, so if looking for an affordable college feels like playing Russian roulette, the public will eventually just stop playing.

Today, it’s hard to ignore the avalanche of headlines declaring a crisis of trust in higher education and highlighting the many historically financially healthy colleges staring down an uncertain future of declining enrollment, no matter how much they discount their sticker price.

No marketplace can survive this way, especially not one where the financial stakes are so high.

That’s why TuitionFit is trying to change the game by making pricing and the market more transparent for everyone: students and their families, higher ed institutions, and policymakers.

Because better data leads to better decisions—and a healthier marketplace.

For many families, the college price they see at the beginning of the process bears little resemblance to the price they’re ultimately asked to pay. Between sticker prices, financial aid formulas, institutional grants, appeals, and competing offers, figuring out what college will actually cost can involve a surprising amount of uncertainty and sometimes negotiation.

That makes it difficult for families to compare colleges on price when they're making their final decisions about which school their student will attend.

College pricing shouldn’t force people to scramble to gather useful information or cross their fingers about affordability. That's why we're working to build a better system for students, families, and even the institutions themselves.

Two questions about higher education:

If colleges published their real prices, would more students enroll?

And if colleges won't offer that transparency, would families build it themselves?

TuitionFit exists because the answer to both was a resounding “yes.” Families deserve to know the actual price their student will be asked to pay. Not average prices from several years ago, not information about generous financial aid, not the little dance where everyone pretends price isn’t negotiable until suddenly it is.

We’re working with families to create more pricing transparency in higher ed. See how:

We’re excited to announce TuitionFit Insights, a newsletter dedicated to the real story behind college pricing, financial aid, and the higher education marketplace.

For decades, students and their families have had little insight into what they'll actually be asked to pay for college until a financial aid offer lands in their inbox. This uncertainty doesn’t serve anyone well—families or higher education institutions.

TuitionFit was founded on a simple premise: students and families deserve access to real pricing, not averages, marketing, or guesswork. In this newsletter, co-founder and CEO Mark Salisbury will draw on his years of experience in higher education as an administrator, researcher, and advocate to explore financial aid strategy, return on investment, student debt, and the incentives shaping how colleges price a degree.

Whether you're a family evaluating college costs, a counselor guiding students through the process, or an advocate for higher ed policy, TuitionFit Insights aims to make the college marketplace more transparent and easier to navigate for everyone.
