DHP's GoROVing program visited Baker High Schools Marine Science classes earlier this week. Students were using their engineering skills to design the frames for their underwater robots before testing them in outdoor pools. It was fun, challenging, and a little hot!

This GoROVing kit will be on the road again soon so stay tuned to follow along with its travels this fall!

We had a wonderful day with Bayside Academy’s 11th and 12th grade out on the boat and discussing marine debris. These students participated in a mini-beach cleanup on the East End Beach where they focused on finding what we call microplastics and macroplastics. The big difference between them is size. Microplastics are plastic pieces smaller than 5 mm while macroplastics are anything bigger than that.

We are so happy for Chenein Compton, one of DHP's excellent summer camp counselors, on this recognition! Congratulations Chenein!

For more than 20 years, Chenein Compton has taught high school science at Oxford High School in Alabama. And for a lot of that time, she's been quietly building something bigger than a single classroom.

Compton started a science research and science fair program at Oxford High, giving students a real shot at doing original research, not just reading about it. She partnered with local biologists to create field experiences so students could get out of the classroom and into the natural sciences firsthand.

She's also stayed active beyond her own school, working as an AP reader and AP College Board consultant for AP Environmental Science, and spending summers as a counselor at Dauphin Island Sea Lab camps.

This month, that work earned Compton, a National Board Certified Teacher, a spot in the Society for Science's 2026 to 2027 Advocate Program. She's one of 100 educators picked nationwide.

It's a well earned honor for someone who's been showing students they're capable of real scientific work long before anyone gave her an award for it.

Just before school groups head down to DISL for the academic year field trip season starting September 1st. For the last two days, DHP taught at our Career Academies of MCPSS partner, Alma Bryant High School , teaching students about ocean exploration and ROVs to kick off a year of marine biology. Always a great visit to Ms. Odom's classes to chat, build, & fly !
