Dauphin Island Sea Lab - Discovery Hall Programs

Dauphin Island Sea Lab - Discovery Hall Programs PreK-12 field classes, virtual programs, summer camps, teacher workshops, outreach across the state

Discovery Hall Programs (DHP), named for the early research vessel, "Discovery", began in 1975, opening the field of marine science to Alabama secondary school students through hands-on field and laboratory experiences. Since its initiation, DHP has expanded its marine education program to include K-12 students, teacher training / enhancement programs, and Elderhostel seminars. Easy access to bea

ches, coastal wetlands, Mobile Bay and the Gulf of Mexico provides the Program with an ideal location for marine learning experiences. All Discovery Hall Programs are intended to increase understanding and appreciation for science and the marine environment by directly involving participants in that environment with dynamic, hands-on activities. Today, over 15,000 students a year participate in Discovery Hall Programs

Just before school groups head down to DISL for the academic year field trip season starting September 1st. For the last two days, DHP taught at our Career Academies of MCPSS partner, Alma Bryant High School , teaching students about ocean exploration and ROVs to kick off a year of marine biology. Always a great visit to Ms. Odom's (Ally Fish) classes to chat, build, & fly !

Our last camp of the summer, Ocean STEAMers, has wrapped! Campers explored the properties of light☀️ in the ocean, how organisms are adapted to survive in different zones, made solar oven smores, and used simple circuits to imitate deep sea bioluminescence!
Thanks to everyone who joined us in our summer programs. We've had a great summer and hope to sea 🌊 all of you again in summer 2027!

BIE is wrapping up the last DHP overnight summer program for 2026! Finishing up a busy day, that started on R/V Alabama Discovery research vessel, then a camp surprise with a rehabbed Kemp's Ridley Sea 🐢 release on the West end beach, and that was just morning! Campers finished up the day with preserved specimens & a squid dissection with an after hours trip across the street to the Alabama Aquarium at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab ! What a great ending to a fabulous summer season!
We appreciate all of the campers, parents,
our incredible counselors, awesome interns, and attending teachers, that have helped make 2026 another successful DHP summer!
