Camp McDowell showed us a version of learning that felt deeply human, deeply joyful, and impossible to forget. On the surface, Gulf Shores Middle School students were canoeing, chopping logs, planting and harvesting vegetables, sifting compost, collecting eggs, feeding livestock, milking goats, singing songs around a campfire, hiking to waterfalls, cooking together, and dancing to the pulse of lightning bug flashes.

Moreover, we walked away with a newfound respect for all of the work and resources that go into producing the food we eat. We learned how interconnected our food systems and the natural resources they depend on are with each other. We felt how good it is to serve others. We cherished real conversations and laughter in the absence of screens and internet. We learned that rain doesn't delay work or play–with the right gear and mindset... it can add magic to the moments.

Most importantly, we learned how to speak softly, listen carefully, and live mindfully. There is so much wonder in the humdrum of our days–can we slow down enough to appreciate it?

Students spent their last hours of 7th grade building the tallest towers they could using left over straws and play-dough. Special thanks to all the amazing students, and Mrs. Hemendinger, for helping to pack our classroom in boxes for moving day. It’s been a wonderful year together!

Field Day is simply the best. 7 hours to play. 7 hours of jumping, sliding, tug-of-warring, trivia, paper airplanes, chanting, volley balling, hackey sacking, corn holing, soccer, basketball, kickball, inflatables, sponge relays, art contests, cart wheels, candy…. 7 hours of pure joy. No better way to end another excellent year.

This field day was just a little bit sweeter–House Altruismo, the House of Giving, took home the title of Field Day Champions, 2026!

Today, Gulf Shores Middle School students explored the beach with a new lens. Dr. Gentry, from the Learning Campus at Gulf State Park-Alabama, led us on a fossil dig. We sifted sands to find otoliths (fish "ear" bones) from 4 million years ago. The specimens, including 3 ancient shark teeth, were contributed to an international scientific effort to learn more about the Pliocene Epoch.

After our paleontology work, we put on our archeology hats. Students learned about the indigenous tribes that inhabited Gulf Shores from 150AD to 1500AD. We examined photos of pottery recovered locally, and learned that the clay was reinforced with pulverized seashells to keep it from shrinking in the kiln. Finally, students made their own pottery using the same coiling techniques that indigenous Mississippian artisans used.

When we were reflecting on our field work and our studies, our recent WaveMaker, Canaan Bolding said, "It's important to study our history so we can prepare for our future."

Amazing group of scholars!

Congratulations to Kallie Bryant, who earned Honorable Mention at the Mobile Regional Science Fair for her project studying how light cycles affect the bioluminescent glow of dinoflagellates.

We’re also proud of Amelia Autrey and Sterling Miller for representing Gulf Shores Middle School. Amelia designed a still to desalinate Little Lagoon and Gulf waters, while Sterling studied the impact of soil moisture on plant growth.

We are incredibly proud of our Science Fair finalists and their outstanding work!

Another wonderful Gulf Shores Gives Back day in the books. Students refurbished garden beds, trails, and bioswales at the Gulf Coast Center for Ecotourism & Sustainability. It was a delight to witness our students enjoying the opportunity to give back to a community that supports us so well.

Special shout out to our Sustainability Club members who volunteered at our Gulf Shores Arbor Day Celebration this Saturday. Lucas, Aaron, Jonah, Gia, Alli, Oriana, Lillian, Zoey, Beck and Izzy helped carry and load some of the 450 trees that our city gave away to Gulf Shores residents in honor of Arbor Day!

Community events like this make it easy to cherish the people and the place that we call home!
