David Chastain said he's doing great.
- Back burns need no grafting and are healing fast
- Only a back sprain and hairline crack of one neck vertebrae (the T4)
- Got stitches removed from his head today.
I asked if I could provide his address if anyone wanted to send him a card; he said that's "sweet but not expected or necessary"....but he did not object, so his address is 9354 East Woodview drive, Bloomington, IN 47401. Our talk was very brief because he was heading out the door, but his message was consistent: "there is no explanation for how he came out of it so well, it's miraculous." His spirit was very high, and he was his same ol' self of wit and sharpness!

Update from David Chastain’s daughter:

I wanted to make an announcement to the friends and family inquiring after my dad, David Chastain. He is alive and well, has been discharged from the hospital, and is resting at home.

Friday was my amazing grandfather's 90th birthday. Richard "Dick" Chastain was a retired General and a highly respected and loved man and leader in the community, so there was a big celebration planned for him Saturday. On Saturday morning, there was a gas explosion in the house. The blast happened right beneath the bedroom my dad was staying in, and threw him, still asleep, through the roof of the two story house, and out into the front yard. Absolutely miraculously, he escaped with some minor burns, a gash to the head, and a possible spinal fracture that's still allowed him to walk. He even wonders if he landed on the mattress that he was blown out with.They airlifted him to Indianapolis, and since then we've discovered he had no other broken bones or internal injuries save his spine, and was released yesterday evening. How a man can survive that and walk the rubble the next day is beyond me. God surely had a hand in this.

My grandfather and his partner did not survive the blast and fire. The whole house burned to the ground within minutes. It has been a very devastating weekend for our family, but we are good at being there for each other during hardships - and we will love each other's wounds clean with time. And, of course, we are very grateful that my dad still walks this earth.
