BEMS students have officially started Phase 1 of our Reading Initiative! Students are checking out books from the Media Center and bringing them home to read. As part of their daily homework assignment, students should read for 15–20 minutes each night.
Right now, our goal is simple: we want students to develop the habit of reading a REAL book every day. We are encouraging students to put down their iPads and spend time reading rather than playing Roblox, watching TikTok, or engaging in other electronic activities.
As I shared during our Title I meeting, our children’s brains are still developing at this age. We want to be intentional about helping them develop healthy habits, including making time for reading and limiting recreational screen time. Our goal is to encourage students to experience the enjoyment, focus, and imagination that come from reading a book.
Each student has been given a reading log to record their daily reading. There is also a space for parents to initial each day after their child has completed their 15–20 minutes of reading. Your support at home is an important part of making this initiative successful!

We continue to experience AT&T phone issues at all of our buildings and schools in the Darlington area. Our phone service is also experiencing interruptions at Bay Road Elementary School and Lamar-Spaulding Elementary School. AT&T is on site working to resolve the issues this morning, and we hope service will be restored soon.

Fees may be paid on-line or at the school. Students can turn in fees to their homeroom teachers.
