Chicago gang members seek new lives through writing, reading memoirs 12/04/2017

The power of reading and writing!

What if...boys knew this power during their pre- and early adolescent years?

What if...just one adult they admired showed them how reading and writing can help them become the best version of themselves in the future?

What if can become what's possible!

Today is a great day to read in front of/with a boy who resists reading and talk to him about why you value reading and him.

Chicago gang members seek new lives through writing, reading memoirs Just days before his daughter's first birthday in 2006, Leronn Johnson was shot once in the shoulder and twice in his back. He says the bullets remain inside his body, a permanent reminder of the gang life he was part of growing up on the streets of Chicago.

We can't be okay with boys who resist reading.

But how do we help them open up to reading so they can become the best version of themselves?

The simple answer: Boys need at least one person they admire, outside of school, to step up and show them how to value reading by modeling reading.

Easier said than done. But by knowing the 10 foundational building blocks boys need to read, it doesn't have to be.

Be the one! Give a boy you know the gift of reading today.

It's easy with 'Boys and Books.'

Boys and Books: What You Need to Know and Do So Your 9- to 14-Year-Old Son Will Read (Boys Will Read | Parent Series) Give Boys the Gift of Reading Have you begged your son to read a book, but he insists that he hates reading and won't? StoryCorps 11/23/2017

What a great way to invite boys to get to know their families this Thanksgiving. Creating an oral history, interviewing, and storytelling are great ways to learn the value of people's stories.

I remember separately interviewing my mom's parents for a class project when I was in seventh grade. Both of them talked a lot about the impact the Great Depression had on their lives. Prior to interviewing them, I didn't know anything about 1929. Afterwards, I became fascinated. I went to the library and read everything I could about it and when the project was complete, I respected and understood my grandparents so much more. And to this day, I love to read historical fiction that takes place during the Great Depression.

Here's to boys reading!

Training men and boys to honor women 11/10/2017

Report: Young kids spend over 2 hours a day on screens 10/19/2017

**Important Report from Common Sense Media**

A must-read for parents of young kids, but two quotes stood out for me that I want to share:

1. "The report...found that children 8 and younger now spend more time on mobile screens -- around 48 minutes a day -- than they do reading or being read to, which on average is about 30 minutes a day."

2. "In a study that published in the journal Developmental Psychology last month, 3rd through 5th graders (ages 8-11) who had their own TV or video games in their bedrooms spent more time with media. More time spent was associated with a reduced amount of sleep and reading, and that has been tied to lower grades in school."

It used to be that kids 8 and younger were engaged with less screen time and more reading time. When kids turned 9 is where the huge drop in reading began and continued into high school.

Now, even kids 8 and younger are reading less! This scares and worries me greatly because of what happens as they get older (like the new study in the journal Developmental Psychology).

Reading matters, and it can be balanced into a kid's day. It must be balanced into a kid's day.

My new books, 'Real Boys Read: The 90-Day Step-by-Step Coaching Plan to Successfully Motivate Your 9- to 14-Year-Old Son to Win the Reading Game' and the companion book for boys, 'Win the Reading Game: The 10X Ultimate Reading-Reboot Playbook for Boys" are about to be published on Amazon.

I share the home-reading-habit system I created for parents to help their sons develop the daily reading habit and still allow for time to do everything they love.

The reason I left teaching and wrote my Boys Will Read | Parent Series is because I wanted to make sure that if any parent, anywhere, was worried about the amount of time their son spent on his device and wasn't reading, they had access to a proven home-reading-habit system for boys ages 9 to 14.

You don't need to use my system, but kids deserve the researched benefits that only the daily reading habit can offer to them.

Report: Young kids spend over 2 hours a day on screens Nearly half of kids 8 and younger in the United States have their own tablet, according to a new report.

Which of These 7 Personality Traits Do You Share with the World's Richest People? 10/09/2017

Bill Gates has been a self-directed reader (reads for himself) since childhood, and today he reads about 50 nonfiction books a year.

Why? Because reading is his primary way of learning, and it's how he moved his way up in the world and continues to do so today.

Something to think about at the start of the week: If your son resists reading/only reads for someone else, what's his competitive advantage for success?

Which of These 7 Personality Traits Do You Share with the World's Richest People? Possessing the same characteristics of extremely rich and successful people is half the battle.

10/09/2017

I'm thinking about building a course teaching parents of boys who resist reading to achieve the joy of their son becoming a self-directed reader and thriving through my proven home-reading system. Do you know anyone who might be interested?
