Religion Program at Averett University

Great mail day! I received my copy of THE STATE OF OLD TESTAMENT STUDIES, edited y Chip Hardy and M. Daniel Carroll R.! I’m honored to have had the opportunity to be part of a project that includes such a stellar roster of contributors, and am thankful to Chip and Danny for being the masterminds of this important new volume. Just got the cover for THE LAST ENEMY TO BE DESTROYED: THE PROBLEM OF DEATH AND THE ULTIMATE CHRISTIAN HOPE, forthcoming from Wipf and Stock Publishers. This is a Lenten devotional, with 20 illustrations by Sarah Hawkins, and it should be out before year's end, well in advance of Lent. It's still in production, but should be available for pre-order soon!

Friday afternoon, the Introduction to Old Testament Literature class went on a field trip to Ohev Zion Synagogue in Martinsville, VA. They received a lecture and a tour of the synagogue, and then sat in the service. The congregation was so friendly, and they shared refreshments and challah with us after the service. The students loved it!

The Religion program made a strong appearance at yesterday’s Averett student awards ceremony. Mary Hawkins won the Religion program’s leadership award for her efforts to promote the Religion program and religious life on Averett’s campus, and for launching a new club, Creative Faith. Hannah Walton won the department’s Outstanding Student in Religion Award for her engagement in the classroom and for her excellent research and writing. We’re proud of both of these young women and for what they’re doing in the Religion program at Averett University!

The drawings inside are by my middle daughter Sarah Hawkins, and the book is dedicated to my grandparents, Chervis and Ora Isom, and my children, Hannah, Sarah, Mary, and Adam. My prayer is that this volume will be a blessing to many!
