New episode of The Evolved Caveman now out.
Healthy Masculinity: Why Strong Men Need Vulnerability, Connection, and
Psychological Flexibility
What does healthy masculinity actually look like?
Healthy masculinity is the ability to choose your response rather than defaulting to one rigid version of manhood. A man with healthy masculinity can be stoic when stoicism serves him, and open when openness serves him. The trait is a tool he uses, not a script that runs him.
Psychologists call this psychological flexibility.
For many men, the old rules were simple: be strong, know the answer, don’t look weak, don’t need anyone, and definitely don’t tell another guy you miss him.
In this episode of The Evolved Caveman, Dr. John Schinnerer — executive coach, Ph.D. in
psychology from UC Berkeley, and consultant on Pixar’s Inside Out — talks with Dr. Daniel Ellenberg, licensed therapist, leadership coach, and founder of Strength with Heart, about what emotionally mature masculinity actually requires.
The answer isn’t becoming softer or abandoning traditionally masculine traits. It’s developing psychological flexibility — the ability to choose the right response for the situation rather than getting trapped in one rigid version of masculinity.
As John puts it:
Do you have the trait — or does the trait have you?
A man who can be stoic is different from a man who can only be stoic. A man who can compete is different from a man who turns every interaction into a contest. And a man who can stand on his own is different from a man who believes needing connection makes him weak.
