This past September, I had the opportunity to walk through my old high school during my 20-year reunion.
The most meaningful moment was standing outside the office of Dr. Peter Read.
Peter was our school psychologist and the creator of Edgemont High School’s Peer Leadership program—the inspiration behind the Peer Leadership Program we have at Komotion Dance Program today.
High school wasn’t easy for me. I moved to the U.S. just before 7th grade without knowing English or understanding the culture, and I spent years feeling like I didn’t quite belong.
Peter and Peer Leadership became a saving grace. The relationships I built and the lessons I learned shaped so much of the person—and leader—I eventually became.
Years later, when we created Peer Leadership at Komotion, I wanted to build something Peter would be proud of: a place where young people learn to lead by connecting, encouraging, noticing others, and making people feel like they belong.
Which brings me to the Oreo in our logo.
Peter always kept Oreos in his office.
I can still picture him leaning forward in his chair when I was struggling. Before asking questions or trying to fix anything, he’d simply ask:
“Do you want some Oreos?”
That’s why there’s an Oreo in our Peer Leadership logo.
It’s there for Peter.
He taught me that leadership isn’t about being the loudest person in the room or having all the answers. Sometimes it’s simply noticing someone, sitting beside them, making sure they’re okay, and helping them feel like they belong.
Sometimes, leadership starts by offering an Oreo.
Every time I see that little cookie in our logo, I remember where this journey began—and what I hope we continue passing on to the next generation. 💙
