One of two events we have going on today. Riverkeeper John Zaktansky is running a fishing/casting station at the North Montour Sportsmen Association's annual Youth Field Day next to the Montour Preserve. A great event and partnership and alternative activity since water conditions didn't allow kayaking this year.

We recently enjoyed a field trip with Champ Camp at the Montour Preserve ... one of numerous summer field trips connecting young people with our natural resources.

Come on out and visit this Friday (4-8pm) and Saturday (10am-8pm) Aug. 14-15, 2026, for an Open House at the Middle Susquehanna Riverkeeper Association's 112 Market Street, Sunbury office.

This weekend is the Sunbury River Festival, and we invite you to stop in, cool off a little, refill your water bottle and check out a variety of hands-on activities and info about our association and upcoming events.

We will have our interactive beaver dam table (take turns building dams in the flowing water and observe what happens to the stream and flood plain), a transient river art opportunity where you can add or otherwise manipulate our mini-riverscape, take a paddle down the West Branch of the Susquehanna River via our virtual reality (VR) experience, help provide a voice for vulnerable species with a special advocacy project involving posters and music, check out our plastic bottle boat and learn more about plastics in the Susquehanna River, use an underwater camera to find 3D-printed hellbenders in a stream bed aquarium and learn more about our efforts to help the hellbender, check out and purchase new merchandise that helps our association continue to make a difference, sign up to help volunteer or donate and more.

Ultimately, it is a great way to catch up with our association after a super busy summer schedule, chat about river health and overall threats and learn about what we have coming up. Plus, you may win a cool door prize or two!

Where has the summer gone??? Last week was the final one for intern Maggie Yonkin, her second summer with our association. A special thanks to Maggie for her incredible attitude, willingness to jump in and engage with people of all ages (especially with our youth programming this year) and strong desire to make a real difference for our waterways and natural environmental in general.

We are asked quite often from parents on how they can engage in outdoor activities more meaningfully with their kids as a family unit ... the Susquehanna Greenway Expo TOMORROW (Saturday, Aug. 1) is the perfect opportunity for this!

More than 50 outdoors-related vendors, food trucks, games, interactive environmental education, even a climbing wall this year! Even the weather looks like it will cooperate with us this year!

SUNBURY — Anyone wanting to learn how where to launch a boat or what gear is needed to fish will have an opportunity to have their questions answered Saturday.

Check out the remaining slate of Floating Classrooms aboard the Hiawatha Paddleboat in Williamsport! We just added the final cruise ... a special combination of history of the logging industry in the Williamsport area with PA Lumber Heritage's Rowan Crisp, and a unique look at fall foliage with DCNR educator Curtis Sherwood, who will point out how location, slope and other variables impact colors and vibrancy.
