MUSIC ON OUR MINDS
At Hogsett, music teacher Heather Gover teaches that music isn't just notes on a page or a tune in the ears. It is artistic, it is scientific, it is physical, it is literary, and it is an important part of life. Here, she leads her students in a series of activities that illustrate how music can be interpreted with sounds AND with movement. She begins with the mantra: "Music helps me feel. Music helps me think. We all share music."

Danville talent is on glorious display this weekend in Harrodsburg, with the opening of The Theater Aunties' production of SLEEPY HOLLOW! Violet Underwood (6th grade, Bate) and Dorothy Underwood (3rd grade, Toliver) will take the stage with Toliver teacher Karen Tompkins for a frightfully festive evening of spook-tacular delights. The show runs through September 12 at Fort Harrod - but bewaaaaare! Tonight's performance is sold out! Boooo! (Yay for them but boo for us!)

SLAM! The literary arts are alive and well at DHS, thanks to great teachers like Derek Otto and his annual poetry slam in Gravely Hall! His classes performed this week, with a captive (and captiVATED) audience of the other English classes. We're so proud of these talented students, and the teachers who inspire them to express themselves and harness the power of the written word every day!

Friday night, Gravely Hall Performing Arts Center was honored to host the Rev. Dr. William Barber II, Mayor J.H. Atkins, and many more distinguished guests for Kentuckians For The Commonwealth's event SINGING FOR DEMOCRACY. We're grateful to KFTC for bringing Rev. Barber and a host of faith leaders to Gravely, along with hundreds of civic-minded and social justice-committed Kentuckians.

Congratulations to Vickie Hunt, art teacher at John W. Bate Middle School, the recipient of this year's Lydia Ellis Innovative Arts Award, presented by the Danville Schools Friends of the Arts! Vickie is an outstanding educator, artist, and mentor, and the work of her students (and therefore hers as well) can frequently be seen all over town and beyond - - as evidence of her extraordinary guidance, faith, and care for her community. Her work has been award-worthy for years, and we're delighted to see her artistry and innovation recognized and lauded!

Tonight: the Eclectic Spring Concert!

This evening, John W. Bate Middle School and Danville High School's combined choirs will showcase music from just about every genre imaginable, with selections from musical theatre, modern choral works, pop and folk music, and more! Tonight's concert will feature works from Pavel Chesnokov to Elton John, and everything in between including (and this one's REALLY exciting!) the world premiere of a brand new work - "You Are Old, Father William." With text from the poetry of Lewis Carroll and music by local composer Richard Power, this new piece will be performed for the very first time by the DHS Advanced Choir!

It's Monday night. Who wants to cook on a MONDAY? What better time to take the family (the extended family - - grammies and grampies and uncles and aunties) to Zaxby's, to enjoy a delicious chicken dinner AND support Danville High School's chapter of the International Thespian Society, the national honor society for theatre students. Tonight, a percentage of all sales (5-8pm) will go to the wonderful (and VERY dramatic) students of DHS's theatre department!

LYDIA ELLIS INNOVATIVE ARTS EDUCATOR AWARD
NOMINATIONS DUE FRIDAY, MAY 8!

The Danville Schools Friends of the Arts are currently seeking nominations for the Lydia Ellis Innovative Arts Educator Award!

Teachers in the Danville Schools who make a significant contribution to engaging Danville students PK – 12th grade in the visual, performing, and media arts, either as an arts teacher or as a teacher who integrates the arts into multi-disciplinary instruction. The award is named for Lydia Ellis, an outstanding retired arts educator and media specialist–and the award’s first recipient. Winners receive a plaque and monetary award.

Anyone in the Danville School system is eligible to submit a nomination (teachers, parents, staff, students), and submissions are due by noon on Friday, May 8.
