I received some questions about who David Bohm is.
I won't pretend to fully understand his work, nor was that the point of my essay.
What motivated me to write was one of his ideas about fragmentation. Because we cannot fully comprehend the whole, we naturally divide reality into parts we can understand. Over time, we begin to mistake our understanding of the parts for an understanding of the whole.
This rings true for me in my experience of Aikido. The techniques we study are not the art itself. They are tools we use and names we give to recurring patterns that help us understand what is happening.
The art isn't found in ikkyo or iriminage.
The art is found in the "us" those techniques reveal.
