One year of scores is a snapshot. Follow the students.

This fall’s assessment results can tell you a lot—but looking across multiple years can reveal patterns that one year alone may hide.

Ask:
🔎 Where are students gaining ground?
🔎 Where does performance begin to decline?
🔎 Are certain student groups experiencing persistent gaps?
🔎 What patterns emerge as students move through the school?

Before asking, “What should we do?” start with:

“What patterns do we see—and what else do we need to know?”

Kentucky districts have a new writing responsibility—and KASC has a resource to help.

HB 257 removed the separate on-demand writing and editing/mechanics assessments, but it also requires each superintendent to adopt a district writing program policy that includes discipline-specific writing across the curriculum.

KASC has developed a Sample District Writing Program Policy that brings the statutory requirements, Kentucky Academic Standards, and KDE guidance together into practical policy language districts can adapt.

Writing may no longer have its own standalone state assessment, but it remains essential to student thinking, learning, and communication.

Kentucky’s assessment system is changing—but writing still matters.

HB 257 removed the separate on-demand writing and editing/mechanics assessments from the state assessment system. But students will continue to need strong writing skills, including writing across content areas.

The law also requires districts to adopt a writing program policy that includes discipline-specific writing across the curriculum.
So, what does this mean for SBDM councils?

It’s a good time to ask: How can we help keep writing a priority for our students?

Thinking. Meaning. Ownership.

Three simple lenses for looking at learning a little differently.

As you plan, reflect, or walk through a classroom, ask:

THINKING: Who is doing the thinking?
MEANING: Why does this learning matter?
OWNERSHIP: What belongs to the students?

You don’t need a “yes” to every question. Use the TMO lens to notice what’s already strong and find one small shift that could make learning more vibrant.

It’s not another program to implement. It’s a lens for seeing learning differently.
