The fifth annual CEA Summit East is off to a great start!

We are learning, networking and talking through some of the most important opportunities, challenges and trends in the controlled environment agriculture sector!

The event kicked off with a keynote fireside chat, “Grow It, Then What? Building the Bridge to Market,” with Matthew Lohr and Kathlyn Terry Baker. Next up, plenty of breakout sessions, panel discussions and exploring the tabletop exhibits.

More to come from this impactful event, organized by Indoor Ag-Con and the CEA Innovation Center, which is a partnership between IALR and the Virginia Tech College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.

A new cohort kicked off their service terms with the Dan River Year AmeriCorps program this week!

Over this month, we are bringing in more than 30 AmeriCorps members, ranging from youth mental health specialists, healthcare resource specialists and STEM/Literacy tutors and coaches, who will help meet local needs and drive positive change.

Yesterday, IALR hosted Virginia Secretary of Agriculture and Forestry Katie Frazier and members of her staff for a tour of our applied research facilities.

The group explored:

🌱 The VT-IALR Controlled Environment Agriculture Innovation Center
🔬 The Analytical Chemistry Lab
🧫 Biotechnology labs in the Plant Endophyte Research Center
🤖 SMART Platforms for automated plant imaging
⚗️ The fermentation lab

This massive, 18-foot-tall rudder of a decommissioned submarine is part of a sundial in front of the Center for Manufacturing Advancement (CMA) at IALR.

Name: USS Providence (SSN-719)

Nickname: "The Big Dog of the Red Sea," a name given during Operation Iraqi Freedom for launching the most missiles in 2003.

Years of Service: 37

The USS Providence was the first fast-attack submarine to be equipped with a vertical launching system for Tomahawk cruise missiles and went on missions across the globe. The vessel was one of the stealthiest submarines in the world, capable of operating at depths greater than 800 feet and at speeds exceeding 25 nautical miles per hour.

24 hours a day, five days a week.

Here in the Accelerated Training in Defense Manufacturing - ATDM Maritime Training Center, adult learners from across the United States are preparing for meaningful careers in CNC machining, welding, metrology, non-destructive testing and additive manufacturing.

The four-month program operates across three shifts, giving students more than 600 hours of hands-on training with industry-standard equipment. Upon graduation, they go on to careers supporting the construction and sustainment of ships and submarines.

ATDM welcomes adults of all ages and career backgrounds, including those with no prior manufacturing experience, and equips them with the skills needed to thrive in high-demand manufacturing careers.
