Underground Learning Cooperative More than a co-op. 🌎 Location: Danville, IN, off of 200S between 39S and Cartersburg Rd. Level 1s are under 5 years old. Level 2s are our 6-10 year olds.

A homeschool community. 🌱
A drop-off program for ages 4–16 where kids build friendships, explore their interests, and learn through hands-on experiences, creative classes, and plenty of time to just be kids.
📍Danville, IN We are home-based in a 1500 sqft converted basement.

⏰ Hours: Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays full days 8:00-4:30 and half days 9:30-1:30

👧🏻 Ages enrolled: 4 years - 13 years

👯 How many students are enrolled? At capacity, we have 35 students total with an average of 12 students per level

⭐️ What are the levels? Level 3s are our 11+ year olds. In August of 2023 we will add Level 4s which will be 15+

💲 Tuition: tuition is based on three factors - child’s level, number of days enrolled per week, and income. We do offer a sliding scale.

👩‍🏫 How many teachers are there? ULC has seven amazing teachers on staff. All staff members have been involved in the education field and have experience homeschooling their own children.

📖 What curriculum do we use? ULC does not follow any set curriculum. Each school year, the teachers meet as a team and with their students to determine what the next school year will look like. We offer a variety of new experiences for the students to participate in that we feel will spark their interests. We keep lessons flexible, so if something new or more relevant presents itself, we are able to pursue that topic instead! Students are always welcome and encouraged to bring new ideas for daily lessons.

💥 Are students required to participate? Not at all! Students have free choice in how they spend their day. Teachers present activities for whoever would like to participate. If a student isn’t interested in the activity, they’re welcome to find another activity, do art, play in the fort room, or hang out in the quiet corner.

☀️ What does a “typical” day look like? We start the day with class meeting at 9:30. All students are required to join in class meeting. At 10:00 we serve morning snack and begin our first activity of the day. Depending on the day, we will have anywhere from 1-3 activities offered between 10:00-12:00. At 12:00, we do a lunch reminder. The final activity of the day is offered at 1:30. Clubs begin at 2:00. The remainder of the day is free play for students. Pick up for full day students is at 4:30.

Years from now, our kids probably won’t remember every worksheet they completed or every fact they learned.

But we hope they remember the projects they were proud of.

The things they created with their own hands.

The moments they figured something out for the first time.

The laughter shared with friends.

The challenges they worked through.

The times they tried something new, even when it felt a little scary.

The people who encouraged them along the way.

And the feeling of being part of something special.

At ULC, we want learning to be more than something kids do.

We want it to be something they experience, enjoy, and carry with them.

Because education isn’t just about what a child knows when they leave a classroom.

It’s also about the confidence they’ve gained, the relationships they’ve built, and the memories they’ll take with them.

We’re not just creating learning experiences. We’re creating moments that matter. ❤️

Kids need more than opportunities to learn.

They need opportunities to belong.

To build friendships.
To feel included.
To share ideas.
To learn from people who are different from them.
To discover that they have something valuable to contribute.

There’s something special about being part of a community where younger kids can look up to older kids, older kids can encourage younger ones, and everyone has a place.

At ULC, we want kids to know they don’t have to be the best at something to belong.

They don’t have to know all the answers.

They don’t have to be just like everyone else.

They just get to be part of something bigger than themselves. ❤️

Because learning is important, but so are the relationships we build along the way.

And sometimes, the most meaningful part of a child’s experience isn’t just what they learned…

It’s who they learned alongside.

Not every child will always agree.Not everyone will have the same idea.Sometimes someone will want to do it differently....

Not every child will always agree.

Not everyone will have the same idea.

Sometimes someone will want to do it differently.

And that’s okay.

Because learning how to work with other people is something kids need the opportunity to practice.

They learn how to listen.

How to communicate.

How to compromise.

How to share an idea without taking over.

How to disagree respectfully.

How to encourage someone else.

How to work toward a common goal.

These aren’t skills kids magically wake up knowing.

They grow through experience.

At ULC, we love giving kids opportunities to learn alongside one another—not just because they’re learning the subject in front of them, but because they’re learning how to be part of a community.

Because someday, life will require them to work with all kinds of people.

And learning how to do that starts now. ❤️

You can tell a child how something works.

You can read about it.

You can explain it.

But sometimes…

they just need to try it.

When kids build, cook, sew, experiment, create, measure, plant, problem-solve, and work with their hands, they’re not simply “doing an activity.”

They’re experiencing the learning.

They’re figuring out what works.

They’re discovering what doesn’t.

They’re asking questions.

They’re making adjustments.

They’re learning from the process.

And suddenly, something that might have felt like a lesson becomes something they can actually remember because they lived it.

That’s why hands-on learning is such a big part of ULC.

Because sometimes the best way to learn something…

“How does that work?”

“What would happen if…?”

Kids ask a LOT of questions.

And sometimes, those questions are the beginning of some of the best learning.

At ULC, we don’t want curiosity to be something kids have to turn off because we’ve moved on to the next lesson.

We want to make room for it.

Because when a child becomes genuinely curious, they’re not just waiting to be told an answer.

They’re thinking.

They’re wondering.

They’re investigating.

They’re making connections.

They’re discovering.

And sometimes one little question can turn into an entire learning experience.

Curiosity isn’t a distraction from learning.
Curiosity IS learning. 🌱

That’s why we want kids to know that their questions are welcome here.

Because we never know where a good question might lead.

A report card can tell you how a child did on an assignment.

But it can’t always show you:

✨ How confidently they shared an idea
🤝 How they helped a friend
💪 How they kept trying when something was hard
💡 How creatively they solved a problem
🗣️ How they learned to communicate
🌱 How much more independent they’ve become
❤️ How they encouraged someone else
🙌 How proud they were when they finally figured something out

Those things matter.

A lot.

At ULC, we care about what kids are learning—but we also care about the person they’re becoming while they’re learning it.

Because some of the most important growth in a child…

can’t be measured with a grade.

And sometimes, the biggest victories are the ones that never make it onto a report card. ❤️

Emily Krogman (or the other Miss Emily, as she is known by the kiddos) is 24 years old and this is her first year with ULC, but she has been working with kids since 2022. She has worked as a Literacy Coach, Preschool Teacher, Substitute Teacher, and even a Nanny for a lovely ULC family. She is originally from Nashville, TN, but she attended Butler University and Indiana has been home ever since. She has a degree in English with a minor in Education and is currently working towards a teaching license of her own. Her passions are definitely reading and writing, but she loves diving deep into other subjects as well.

Her family currently includes her, her boyfriend Joseph, and their cat. She doesn’t have any kids yet, unless you count the kitty, Solstice. She’s excited for this opportunity and can’t wait to get to know everyone better and see everyone’s growing personalities.

It doesn’t always look like a child doing something completely on their own.

Sometimes it looks like:

“Let me try.”

Figuring out the next step.

Making a choice.

Asking for help when they need it.

Trying again after something doesn’t work.

Taking responsibility for a task.

Helping someone else.

Speaking up and sharing an idea.

These may seem like small things, but they’re building something much bigger:

confidence, responsibility, problem-solving, and self-reliance.

At ULC, we want to give kids opportunities to practice these skills—not just talk about them.

Because we’re not raising kids who will always have someone standing beside them telling them what to do.

We’re helping raise young people who can eventually say:

“I know what to do. And if I don’t, I’ll figure it out.” ❤️

That’s independence.

And it starts with the little things.

What If We Stopped Treating Mistakes Like Failure?

What if a mistake wasn’t something to be embarrassed about…

…but an invitation to try again?

Kids are going to get things wrong.

They’re going to spill things, build something that doesn’t work, forget a step, make the wrong choice, and sometimes have to start all over.

And that’s okay.

Because some of the most valuable learning happens after something doesn’t go as planned.

They learn to pause.

To problem-solve.

To ask questions.

To try a different approach.

To keep going.

At ULC, we want kids to know that getting something wrong doesn’t mean “I can’t do this.”

It can mean:

“I haven’t figured it out yet.”

Because we aren’t just teaching kids how to get the right answer.

We’re teaching them how to keep going when the answer doesn’t come easily. ❤️

Not Every Child Learns the Same Way.

And they don’t have to.

Some kids need to move while they learn.

Some need to see it.

Some need to build it, touch it, create it, or try it themselves.

Some want to ask a hundred questions before they’re ready to move on.

Others need a little time to observe before jumping in.

And some discover they understand something the moment they get the chance to actually do it.

That’s one of the beautiful things about learning outside of a one-size-fits-all environment.

We can make room for different personalities, different interests, different strengths, and different ways of processing the world.

At ULC, we don’t expect every child to learn in exactly the same way.

We want to give them opportunities to discover how they learn best. ❤️
