Twenty-Eight tapestry weavers at the Damascus Fiber Arts School outside Portland, Oregon are weaving 'spectrograms' of bird calls for our JUST LISTEN Exhibition in 2027. INTRODUCING ‘JUST LISTEN’ EXHIBITION

WHO: The Damascus Fiber Arts School, Columbia Basin Basketry Guild, Murmuration Collaboration, and 66 Birds – 3 Degrees groups are coming together for a series of exhibitions throughout the Northwest in 2027.

WHAT: ‘Just Listen’ features birdsong, nests, flight and beauty, bringing together art and science highlighting local backyard birds. Woven tapestries featuring spectrograms – the visual signatures of birdsong; contemporary nests crafted from natural materials; oil paintings of threatened Northwest bird species (66 Birds – 3 Degrees project); and a murmuration tapestry of bird flight are all featured in this extraordinary exhibition.

WHEN and WHERE:
Brookwood Library Gallery, Hillsboro, Oregon: March – April 2027
Postmark Center for the Arts, Auburn, WA: May – July 2027
Additional locations/dates TBD.

WHY: Just Listen is a collaboration between Pacific Northwest, North America and international artists merging art and science appreciation of bird songs, habitat, conservation and advocacy. Stay tuned for updates throughout the year!

Emily Trujillo, 8th generation Chimayo weaver, up from her home state of New Mexico to teach us a thing or two about the history and weaving technique of the Chimayo weavers and the Rio Grande style. This is her first time to Oregon so we took a short jaunt up to Jonsrud Point so she could see our mountain. But where she is most comfortable is in front of a loom. Nancy's masterpiece. With Sylvia Heyden guiding her on in spirit, Nancy was able to create joyful movement that music and dance brings to our lives. I believe this was from an old photograph of two of her favorite aunts dancing together. Isn't it magical? We love it Nancy, great work.

John Beard, our Raven's Tail Instructor and his Raven's Tail weavers gather here at the school on occasion to weave, share tips, and just enjoy each other's company. A few weeks back he brought in a rug his father made several decades ago.The simplicity speaks softly. His Mother and Father were marvelous weavers in the Navajo-style. His collection must be extraordinary with his family's long history. thanks for sharing John.
