Today is World Wildlife Day. Proposed by Thailand in 2013, the United Nations designated this day to raise awareness of the world’s wild animals and plants. March 3rd of 2014 was the first celebrated World Wildlife Day. This year, March 3rd also marks the 53rd anniversary of CITES, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora which was signed in 1973!

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources officially recognizes 566 species and subspecies of plants and animals as endangered, threatened, in need of conservation, or endangered extirpated. Along with other states across the nation, Maryland has a State Wildlife Action Plan (SWAP) in place to outline strategic conservation approaches for wildlife and wildlife habitats. This year our SWAP will be updated with more information as Maryland continues to be at the forefront of wildlife conservation!

The theme for World Wildlife Day this year is "Partnerships for Wildlife Conservation." Here are some of Maryland’s partners for conservation of our native wildlife species.

The Audubon Society and wildlife rehabilitation centers often warn that birds like Cedar Waxwings can mistake artificial berries for food — leading to fatal intestinal blockages.
Real or dried berries feed life; plastic ones only imitate it.
This season, decorate with nature, not against it. 🌿❤️
✨ Choose real fruit, pinecones, or seed garlands — safe beauty for all.

“It must not be forgotten that the basic law of children's creativity is that its value lies not in its results, not in the product of creation, but in the process itself. It is not important what children create, but that they do create, that they exercise and implement their creative imagination.”

We're all for seasonal decor, but please choose reusable and sustainable options whenever possible. Making choices to skip things like fake spiderwebs outside are simple things you can do. If you still want to have the spooky feel of fake spiderwebs why not take it inside and after Halloween put it in storage to reuse next year.

We are still watching the caterpillars and butterflies. I missed two monarchs emerging. I probably missed one by minutes. Its wings were still crumpled when I saw it. 😕 I missed another by a couple of hours, but I got to see it fly away. I’m watching a couple of swallowtail caterpillars now. They have found the dill and parsley. 🐛🦋

Lots of caterpillars this year!
