ABIDE: A Weekly Thought for Families
Week 3: Taking Time With Jesus
By Pastor Nate
As parents, we spend so much of our day giving. We give our time, our energy, and our attention. Some days, by the time everyone is fed, homework is finished, and the house settles down, we have very little left. We want our children to know Jesus, but how can we share with them what we are not receiving ourselves?
On the night before the cross, Jesus shared words His friends would need for the rest of their lives. They needed to take His words to heart. We need to lean in and listen too. Jesus said, “Abide in Me, and I in you” (John 15:4). That invitation is for tired parents too. We can come to Him just as we are, with our worries, our unfinished tasks, and our need for help.
Each day, look for moments when you can lean in and spend some time with Jesus. Before picking up your phone in the morning, read a few verses from John 15. Or pause before school pickup and pray, “Jesus, I’m tired. Please fill my heart with Your love. Give me wisdom to understand what my children need and patience in how I respond.”
Later, share one simple thing with your child: “I was worried today, so I talked to Jesus about it.” You do not have to have everything figured out to help your children know Him. Let them see that you need Him too. As we spend time with Jesus and learn how much He loves us, His love begins to show in how we love our children.
