Today, we remember and honor Coach O—the coach who built the foundation of Dalton State Basketball and established a legacy that continues to shape our program today.

The wins and championships tell only part of the story. His greatest legacy lives in the countless student-athletes he mentored, the relationships he built, and the culture of excellence, perseverance, and family that he created. Because of his vision and leadership, generations of Roadrunners have had the opportunity to wear the blue and silver with pride.

Though we grieve his passing, we are grateful for the lasting impact he made on Dalton State. His influence will continue to be seen in every game played, every banner raised, and every life touched by the program he helped build.

Your legacy will forever live on at Roadrunner Nation.

The Dalton State community joins the larger Dalton community in mourning the passing of legendary former basketball coach and faculty member Melvyn Ottinger, affectionately known by generations of Roadrunners as “Coach O.”
Ottinger, one of the most influential figures in Dalton State’s history, passed away July 6. His impact on the college, its athletic identity and the Dalton community remains immeasurable. A huge thank you to the Dalton State Foundation and the Board for treating our staff to a wonderful appreciation lunch and for taking the time to celebrate the incredible impact our staff make on our students and campus every day.

A special shoutout to the Faculty Senate and Staff Council for planning and facilitating the fun activities that made the afternoon even more enjoyable.

We are grateful to be part of a community that recognizes and values the dedication, hard work, and heart our staff bring to Dalton State each day. 💙🤍
