🚀 Building the future of engineering starts with strong partnerships.

We were honored to join Shaw Industries in welcoming Dr. Asaf Varol, the new Shaw Industries Chair in STEM to Dalton State College. A special thank you to Shaw for establishing and sustaining the Shaw Industries Chair in STEM, an investment that continues to strengthen STEM education, student success, and workforce development at DSC.

Thank you as well to Shaw for hosting us at the Shaw Design Center and for their ongoing commitment to creating opportunities for the next generation of engineers.

Dr. Varol shared an inspiring vision centered on hands-on, industry-connected learning through internships, undergraduate research, capstone projects, plant visits, and expanded opportunities in automation, robotics, and artificial intelligence. We are excited to see how Dr. Varol's efforts will continue enhancing engineering experiences, supporting student success, and building the engineering talent pipeline to meet our partner's needs.

Reconnect with fellow alumni, faculty, and current members of the biology program while enjoying great food and friends on the Dalton State Quad. An optional tour of the updated Sequoyah Hall and Peeples Hall facilities will be available.

For 35 years, Dr. John Lugthart and Gretchen Lugthart have helped shape Dalton State College and the surrounding community in meaningful ways.
From teaching and mentoring student researchers and interns to maintaining the DSC Trails and supporting beloved outreach programs like Creek Critters and Stream Stomp Camp, their combined contributions have left a lasting mark on generations of students and community members.
Thursday, we celebrated their remarkable legacy and thanked them for their years of dedication and service. Congratulations, Dr. Lugthart, on your retirement, and best wishes to both John and Gretchen as they begin this exciting new chapter! 🎉

This summer, three Dalton State Environmental & Sustainability Studies students - Tristan Moore, Mariana Salazar, & Raven Wallin - worked with a crew from the GA Dept. of Natural Resources to assess road culverts for their suitability of fish passage. The data which they collected will be used to prioritize culverts in need of replacement with the ultimate goal of protecting the great diversity of fish, such as the federally threatened Trispot Darter (pictured here), which live in our region's streams and rivers. It was difficult, hot work but they did an outstanding job!
