Check out this amazing bulletin board created by Virginia, our site coordinator at Piner Middle School in Sherman Independent School District, for Mental Health Awareness Month! It's crucial for students to have a supportive environment and know where to seek help when needed.

Did you know that about half of Americans will experience a diagnosable mental health condition in their lifetime? For most, symptoms start by age 14. Remember, it's never too early to prioritize your mental health and seek support. Early intervention can truly make a difference and save lives.

Every month, Communities In Schools of Texas highlights a site coordinator from across our statewide network, and this month the winner is from CIS Dallas! Congratulations, Jacklyn Canales!

Jacklyn spreads joy wherever she goes. She serves her campus, students, and families with compassion and dedication. Her work is felt by everyone at Lang Middle School and beyond. She partnered with school staff to host a Harvest Festival and provided 15 turkey baskets for families. In December, she led the 12 Days Of Lang-Mas with the ALL students to continue spreading joy. Jacklyn's hard work is evident in her consistent effort, determination, and the results she achieves. Whether it's tackling challenges, meeting deadlines, or going the extra mile for the students and families she serve. Jacklyn’s dedication shines through in all she does.

The energy this morning at Sheffield Elementary School in Carrollton-Farmers Branch Independent School District was off the charts! Students filed into the library to meet volunteers from to get a new pair of shoes, courtesy of Warm! They had a chance to try on a new pair of shoes of their choosing while a volunteer helped them make sure it was the perfect fit. They received a bag for the shoes they had been wearing and even got to select a fun new pair of socks! Along with the volunteers, a former student was there to help out and performed an original rap for the volunteers as the time together concluded. Some students were overjoyed at the opportunity and they showed their appreciation with smiles, high-fives, and hugs. Warm feelings and big smiles abounded!

The mission of World Book Day is to promote reading for pleasure, offering every child and young person the opportunity to have a book of their own. Reading for pleasure is the single biggest indicator of a child’s future success – more than their family circumstances, their parents’ educational background or their income. We want to see more children, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, with a life-long habit of reading for pleasure and the improved life chances this brings them.

Thank you, Brittney Johnson for sharing your experience with Youth Mental Health First Aid! Grateful for partners like you in the DFW community.

Hey friends! I just finished the modules necessary to complete my certification for Youth Mental Health First Aid USA from the National Council for Mental Wellbeing! A couple of weeks ago I spent 6 hours with leaders from Communities In Schools of the Dallas Region and the awesome women you see in this photo, learning how to support youth who might be facing a mental health or substance abuse challenge. We talk a lot about the increasing need for awareness about mental health and resources for local families. I'm thankful to feel more equipped to help others and guide them to the appropriate resources and professionals.

As 2024 Walk Chair for the NAMI North Texas NAMIWalks event, I'm grateful for the opportunity to connect with and learn from so many awesome community partners dedicated to providing resources and hope for local families!

Make plans to join NAMI North Texas May 18th at Riders Field in Frisco!
