Taking the reins.

Congratulations to Madeleine Case ’18, who takes up her position as Young SMU Alumni Board chair this summer!

What is she most looking forward to as the incoming chair?

"The ACC! The Dallas Young Alumni Chapter. Passport to Alumni. An idea or two I have about attracting young alumni to events", she said. "And reuniting with SMU’s impressive students and graduates."

Engage in experiential education ⛰️

SMU Outdoor Adventures is a leadership development program within the Department of Campus Recreation; directed by a full-time professional administrator and run by student employees. It offers various outdoor activities, trips, and a rental shop where students can rent the necessary equipment for their adventures.

The program encourages and offers out-of-class experiential education which ultimately contributes to Mustangs' experiences and development during their academic journey at SMU.

The reports are in, and SMU is on top.

SMU is ranked in the top 20% of national universities, according to the latest U.S. News and World Report rankings. This includes being the #1 university in North Texas and #2 university in the state among private universities.

Claire Ellis '18 studied marketing with an entrepreneurship concentration long before she knew she’d open a candle company that gives back.

After graduation, she opened Malibu Apothecary, a line of clean candles inspired by her travels, with a percentage going back to coastal conservation and breast cancer research.

“You can’t be a business today without some sort of give-back,” she says. “That’s something I’m really passionate about, and why I created these products in the beginning.”

🐎 Mustangs give back:

In case you missed it: during this year's Mustang Move-out, SMU partnered with Goodwill Industries of Dallas to allow students to give back to the community while clearing out their dorms.

With donation trucks positioned throughout campus, students were encouraged to donate gently used clothing, shoes, and household items instead of discarding them.

The result? nearly 29,000 pounds of goods and clothes were saved from the landfill.

Historic adventures on a historic day.

The SMU Center for Presidential History (CPH) partners with Essential History Expeditions to offer students (now part of the SMU Hunt Leadership Scholars Program) an option to study abroad and earn credit hours, while also allowing alumni and friends of the CPH to join in the exploration of places where history happened.

For the 80th anniversary of D-Day, the group traveled to England and France to learn about the people and places of the 1944 invasion of Normandy. Along with the history, students and trip-goers also discussed leadership, duty, and service.

“Outstanding thing every year to see someone from today’s generation and the older generation walking the beaches together. It really gives you hope for the future." - Jeffery A. Engel, Director of the Center for Presidential History

The SMU Simmons School of Education and Human Development was delighted to mark the announcement of Mag Gabbert, Ph.D. and Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Human-Centered Interdisciplinary Studies, as the newly appointed Poet Laureate for the City of Dallas - City Hall.

As the poet laureate, Gabbert will embark on numerous initiatives in collaboration with the Dallas Public Library and the city’s Office of Arts and Culture.

“This city has always been very important to me," said Gabbert, "So it is no exaggeration to say that becoming only the second Dallas Poet Laureate in the city’s history is the greatest honor of my life up to this point.”

See how she aims to ignite inspiration in Dallas:

From Suzhou to Dallas: An international football player's story 🏈

For Max Yao, the dream was always to move to the United States and play in the NCAA. As he started to plan out his future, he knew the fastest way to make that dream a reality was by focusing on his grades; and he did just that.

Once accepted to SMU and with encouragement from his fellow Mustangs, Yao tried out for the football team his sophomore year; with no knowledge or experience of the American sport. He made the roster as an offensive lineman and got straight to work.

Now, Yao is excited to play one more season as he pursues a master's degree at SMU.

Gaining industry insights; with the help of alumni.

Students in the Temerlin Advertising Institute - SMU embarked to NYC for their annual trip, where they got to go behind the scenes with several SMU Alumni working in advertising and creative roles.

The trip, which has been part of the program since 2005, allows current students to see what types of occupations their advertising degree could lead to in the real world.

“It was a great experience for our students to see people working in creative careers outside the world of traditional advertising agencies. Our students made lots of connections on this trip, many of which will lead to jobs and internships.” - Senior Advertising Lecturer and Creative Program Director, Mark Allen

As the month ends, let's reflect and celebrate the important role that Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders (AANHPIs) have played in our shared history.

Continuing AAPI Heritage Month at SMU, the Asian American and Pacific Islander Voices in Higher Education Symposium brought together the SMU community to foster a deeper understanding of the challenges facing the AAPI community on college campuses.

Thank you to Dr. Michele Tugade, expert in mental health and well-being and the Director of the Resilience Laboratory at Vassar College, for attending as the keynote speaker!

In April, over 250 SMU students, faculty, staff members, and North Texas residents participated in a national day of service called The Big Event; the 6th year in a row at SMU.

The Big Event encourages individuals to give back to their local community through volunteer work. This year, four new North Texas non-profit organizations welcomed volunteers as part of SMU’s Big Event, including:

🤝 Network of Community Ministries
🤝 The Main Place
🤝 Grow North Texas
🤝 In My Shoes

Thank you to all the volunteers who participated!

Pursuing the ‘what ifs’.

Arlo Kadane '24, wasn’t sure about his future when he enrolled at SMU. Feeling lost, he decided to explore the university’s offerings — The possibilities were endless.

Over time, he chose to major in international studies and picked up minors in global development, Italian, and environmental anthropology.

“I made it my mission to do everything that interests me, rather than just the classes that would get me my degree,” Kadane said.

See what Arlo and other SMU graduates from the class of 2024 have planned:

"IfYou'reReadingThis" is a national mental health community with a goal of empowering students to build and tap into their support networks.

Locally, the SMU branch of the program helps students feel comfortable talking to somebody about their mental health by identifying the people who want to listen, and by showing an outpouring of love and understanding.

“My focus was to implement programs for students, which I think I’m very good at – the creative side of me shines in those opportunities. Almost every program outside of the classroom for students here at SMU Lyle is something that I have put in place", said Hubbard.

Civil rights icon Opal Lee received her honorary degree from SMU during last week's commencement ceremony, earning a standing ovation from everyone in attendance.

The “Grandmother of Juneteenth" received this degree just days after receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor.

“Her life’s work is most deserving of this recognition, and our students will be inspired by her.” - SMU President R. Gerald Turner.

Tower Scholar EJ Rorem has a natural interest in languages and foreign affairs.

Coming to SMU, he knew he could study Arabic, but he wanted to pursue his family’s native tongue of Persian. Enter: the Critical Language Scholarship Program, which awards funding to students through the U.S. Department of State.

His advice to incoming students: "Find ways to get involved. There's a ton of interesting programs both on and off campus, and the more time you spend applying, the more time you can spend actually being involved."

For some, graduation is a family affair.

This year, Carla Conley Haynes-Clowe ’74 is on the 50-year reunion planning committee, while her daughter, Catherine Haynes Bauer ’99, ’23, will be walking the stage to receive her master’s degree from SMU Simmons School of Education and Human Development.

“It’s very meaningful,” says Catherine. “SMU has meant a lot to our family.”

Not many undergraduates can claim that they’ve traveled to Tanzania to develop new roofing materials – but Kristen Edwards ’24 can.

The music and environmental engineering double major used her Engaged Learning fellowship to explore sustainable rural development last summer and is working on a paper based on her findings.

Her advice to incoming students: "Say yes to as many opportunities as you can."
