During an SMU football game last season, a medical emergency occurred on the Boulevard that required immediate action. Donzeal Curry (center), an SMU security guard, promptly called EMS, ensuring help was on the way.
Meanwhile, Magdeline Pike (second from right), a grad student in the SMU Simmons School of Education and Human Development, stepped in to perform CPR and administer rescue breaths until paramedics arrived. Thanks to their quick thinking and bravery, a life was saved.
Please join us in celebrating these two for being awarded the SMU Police Department’s Citizens Commendation Award!

“I am honored to serve as the next president of an exceptional institution like SMU in one of the most dynamic and fastest-growing cities in the nation, and excited to see how I can make the greatest impact as a leader.
SMU’s stellar – and rising – national reputation, decades of extraordinary internal and external leadership, strong board of trustees, accomplished alumni, and impressively strong and diverse students and faculty made this an opportunity that Kara and I could not pass up.
I look forward to building upon the University’s remarkable momentum and leading SMU into its next era.” - Dr. Jay Hartzell, newly appointed 11th president of SMU
The SMU Board of Trustees unanimously voted Tuesday to name Jay Hartzell as the next president of SMU.
During his last five academic years as president of UT Austin, Dr. Hartzell oversaw all-time highs in applications, enrollment, graduation rates, research expenditures and philanthropic support.
“With Dr. Hartzell taking the reins, I am confident that SMU will continue building on a generation of remarkable success. Gail and I are excited to support Jay and Kara to continue SMU’s prominence and impact at the national level.” - SMU President R. Gerald Turner
He will transition to his new role effective June 1, 2025. Please join us in welcoming him to SMU!

During December's Commencement, SMU trustee Richard Ware II '68 was chosen to speak to the graduating Mustangs. His advice? To hold on to the important things.
"In summary, hold on: Dallas, not New York or LA. Boulevard, good. Best president. Humor. Listen. Style. Exercise. Humility. Do good. Parents, good. Friends, best. So, hold onto SMU. Hold onto all that you've experienced. And hold onto varsity's haunting words: Alma mater, we will be true forever."
What advice do you have for our Mustangs as they move on from SMU?
