French Expression of the Day: "Mettre du pain sur la planche" 🥖

📌 Meaning: To have a lot of work or tasks to get done.

💬 Example: "With all these projects to finish before the end of the month, I really have a lot on my plate!"

This expression comes from the time when bakers would place several loaves of bread on a board before putting them in the oven… in other words, it meant a busy day ahead! 👩‍🍳🔥

✨ How about you — do you have a lot on your plate this week?

Saying “quand les poules auront des dents” is a humorous way to say that an event or situation is impossible or extremely unlikely.

A common oral mistake many French learners make is mispronouncing nasal sounds, like in the words "pain," "vin," "blanc," or "nom."

These nasal vowels don’t exist in English, so learners often pronounce them with an extra vowel or confuse them with each other. For example, "pain" (bread) might sound like "pan" (frying pan), which can change the meaning completely!

To improve, it's helpful to listen carefully to native speakers, repeat out loud, and record yourself to hear the difference. Mastering nasal sounds takes practice, but it really helps your French sound more natural!

Very common French expression.
When you “appelle un chat un chat,” you say things as they are — clearly, even if it’s blunt or uncomfortable.
It’s often used to describe someone who is straightforward and not afraid to speak the truth.

What is Bastille Day?
Bastille Day is France’s national holiday, celebrated on July 14th. It marks the day in 1789 when the people of Paris stormed the Bastille, a prison that symbolized the king’s power. This event was the beginning of the French Revolution, a fight for freedom and equality.

It’s also the birth of France’s national motto: “Liberty, Equality, Fraternity”, values that are still important to the French people today.

Bastille Day is now celebrated with fireworks, parades, music, and parties all over France.
