500,000 Seekers. One Journey.

Today, S.E.E.K. has reached 500,000 subscribers on YouTube.

What began as a study of the hidden dimensions of human spirituality has become a growing community of people willing to look beyond boundaries of culture, dogma, and time.

From the mystery schools of Egypt, Greece, and Rome, to Gnosticism, Kabbalah, Sufism, Hermeticism, and the great contemplative traditions of Asia; from Soma and Haoma to the sacred relationships with visionary plants preserved by Indigenous peoples across the Americas and beyond, humanity has continually sought knowledge of the unseen and a deeper understanding of consciousness.

S.E.E.K. exists to explore these traditions with curiosity, scholarship, and respect, while recognizing that beneath their different symbols and languages there are recurring questions: Who are we? What is consciousness? What does it mean to know the sacred? And what might lie beyond the boundaries of ordinary perception?

1990s Visionary Art: Canvas and Cinema
.. The 1990s marked an important period in the development of psychedelic and visionary art, as artists increasingly explored altered states of consciousness, spirituality, symbolism, and the relationship between human beings and the cosmos.

Few figures were more important to this development than Alex Grey, whose 'Sacred Mirrors' presented the human body through anatomical, psychological, spiritual, and visionary dimensions.

Alex Grey and his wife Allyson established the Foundation for the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors in 1996, while his 1998 book 'The Mission of Art' examined artistic creation as a potential spiritual discipline and explored the relationship between consciousness and artistic intention.

His work helped establish visionary art as a distinct contemporary conversation involving mysticism, sacred geometry, comparative religion, consciousness studies, and entheogenic experience.

At the same time, Terry Gilliam’s 1998 adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson’s 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas' brought psychedelic visual culture to a massive cinematic audience.

Rick Strassman and the DMT Renaissance of the 1990s
.. Rick Strassman’s 1990s DMT research represents one of the most important turning points in modern entheogenic history.

Beginning in 1990 at the University of New Mexico, Strassman navigated extraordinary regulatory obstacles to conduct controlled human research with DMT, helping revive legitimate psychedelic science in the United States after a prolonged period of institutional prohibition.

Between 1990 and 1995, approximately sixty experienced volunteers participated in hundreds of DMT sessions, investigating dose response, subjective effects, neuroendocrine and cardiovascular activity, tolerance, and serotonergic mechanisms.

His 1994 publication provided detailed human pharmacological data, while subsequent research examined why DMT produced profound subjective effects without the conventional tolerance associated with repeated psychedelic administration.

Strassman’s work is significant because it occupies an unusual crossroads between neuroscience and perennial questions of consciousness.

DMT had already existed within a vast ethnobotanical landscape, while Strassman’s laboratory approached it through modern psychopharmacology.

Terence McKenna in the 1990s: The Archaic Revival
.. Terence McKenna became one of the most influential voices in psychedelic and entheogenic thought during the 1990s.

We examine McKenna’s work during the decade through three essential books: 'The Archaic Revival', 'Food of the Gods', and 'True Hallucinations'.

His writing brought together ethnobotany, shamanism, comparative religion, mythology, consciousness studies, evolution, and esoteric philosophy.

'The Archaic Revival' explored the possibility of recovering archaic modes of consciousness, 'Food of the Gods' proposed a controversial relationship between psychoactive plants and human cultural evolution, while 'True Hallucinations' transformed his Amazonian experiences into a deeply personal investigation of shamanism, visionary experience, and the nature of reality.

Iboga and Ibogaine: From Bwiti Initiation to Addiction Treatment
.. During the 1990s, iboga and ibogaine became increasingly important within both indigenous religious history and the emerging field of addiction research.

We examine the contrast between traditional Bwiti use of 'Tabernanthe iboga' in Central Africa and Western attempts to investigate 'ibogaine' as a potential treatment for opioid and co***ne dependence.

The decade witnessed a remarkable transition from underground treatment networks in Europe to increasingly formal scientific investigation.

The NIDA initiated research in 1991, an FDA authorized Phase I study began in the United States in the early 1990s, and Deborah Mash established a medically supervised ibogaine program in St. Kitts in 1996.

At the same time, ethnographic scholarship continued documenting iboga within Bwiti initiation, healing, ancestral communion, and religious practice.

The history of ibogaine raises a larger question about entheogenic knowledge: What happens when a substance embedded within an indigenous cosmology is extracted from its ritual context and reinterpreted through pharmacology, psychiatry, and addiction medicine?

S.E.E.K. is a journey into the traditions, ideas, practices, and experiences through which human beings have sought to understand consciousness, encounter the sacred, and transform themselves.

We explore the ESOTERIC, from Egyptian Hermeticism, Greek and Roman Mystery traditions, Neoplatonism, Gnosticism, Alchemy, Kabbalah, Sufism, Rosicrucianism, and Freemasonry to Hindu Ta**ra, Yoga, Vajrayana Buddhism, Taoism, and other Eastern philosophies of consciousness and liberation. We explore initiation, where death and rebirth become enduring metaphors for transformation: the descent into darkness, the reconfiguration of the old self, and the emergence of transcendence. Across myth, allegory, sacred drama, symbol, and ritual, esoteric traditions have often concealed profound ideas in plain sight, inviting the seeker to look beyond the literal story toward the deeper truths encoded within it.

1988: Alexander Shulgin and the Chemistry of Consciousness
.. Alexander Shulgin occupies a singular place in the modern history of consciousness and chemistry.

During the 1980s, the chemist stood at the intersection of pharmaceutical research, psychedelic science, drug regulation, and the emerging underground culture surrounding altered states of consciousness.

In 1988, Shulgin published The Controlled Substances Act: A Resource Manual, a comprehensive 383-page reference covering federal drug law, controlled substances, chemical structures, regulatory history, DEA classifications, and related legal information.

Shulgin’s relationship with the DEA was unusually complex. He had served as a consultant and expert, while continuing his private investigation of psychoactive compounds.

His strategy of carefully documenting the legal and scientific status of controlled substances offers an important window into how psychedelic research survived during an era of intense prohibition.

At the center of this story is 2C B, a phenethylamine Shulgin synthesized in 1974.

After M**A was placed into Schedule I in 1985, 2C B emerged during the late 1980s as an alternative within psychedelic and recreational culture.

Its later appearance in 'PiHKAL' helped reveal the larger intellectual project behind Shulgin’s work, which eventually expanded into 'TiHKAL', documenting a vast landscape of psychedelic chemistry and subjective experience.

Together, these developments helped preserve a scientific and phenomenological vocabulary for exploring consciousness during an era when legitimate psychedelic research remained severely constrained ...
