We are thrilled to celebrate our colleague Dr. Ariel Ron, who has been named a 2026 MacArthur Fellow!
Dr. Ron is the Glenn M. Linden Associate Professor of the U.S. Civil War Era in the SMU Department of History and Director of the Clements Center for Southwest Studies. His scholarship is reshaping our understanding of nineteenth-century American history, particularly the role of Northern agriculture in economic development and the expansion of federal power.
This extraordinary recognition is a remarkable achievement for Dr. Ron and a proud moment for our department, Dedman College, and the SMU community.
Please join us in congratulating Dr. Ariel Ron on this exceptional achievement!

📰 SMU History Alumni in the News

We are proud to celebrate Dr. Rashida Shafiq, a recent graduate of SMU’s History Ph.D. program, whose scholarship is receiving national and international attention.
Following the passing of Gloria Steinem, Dr. Shafiq’s research on Steinem’s experiences in India and their influence on her approach to feminism has been featured across media outlets in the United States and India.
Dr. Shafiq authored a piece for Made by History and was interviewed by The Juggernaut about her research. Her dissertation has also been cited in coverage by The Guardian, Hindustan Times, and The Telegraph India.
And her work continues! Dr. Shafiq has a forthcoming essay in The Daily Star of Bangladesh and has been invited to speak at Smith College in Spring 2027, where she conducted much of her archival research.
We are excited to see the continued reach and impact of Dr. Shafiq’s scholarship and proud to celebrate the accomplishments of our SMU History Ph.D. alumni.
