Congratulations on your retirement, Mr. Angel!

Today, Lamplighter’s Chief Financial Officer Trey Angel officially retired after a decades-long distinguished career in banking and financial management. Students lined the Peak Playground and cheered him on as he took a final lap in the golf cart to say goodbye.

We will miss you, Mr. Angel! Happy retirement!

For the tenth year, Lamplighter welcomed the Theatre to campus in honor of Black History Month. This year’s performance, “Can You Feel It?,” featured music of the Jackson Five and Michael Jackson in an all-school assembly for Pre-K through fourth grade students.

After the dances of Can You Feel It?, DBT’s Artistic Director Nycole Ray led students in a choreography exercise to learn the moves to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller,” including the signature zombie moves! Students even had a chance to see Ms. Ray demonstrate Michael Jackson’s iconic Moon Walk! What a fun morning at Lamplighter!

Want to learn more about the history of The Lamplighter School? Read about it and explore Lamplighter’s 70-year history in the recently published history book, “On Lighting Lamps: 70 Years at The Lamplighter School.”

This 250-page coffee table book features imagery and stories of Lamplighter dating back to the School’s founding in 1953. The book was created by a committee of alumni volunteers, led by Margaret Johansen Hirsch ‘89, who currently serves as Lamplighter’s Board Chair. Printing of the book was generously provided by the Eugene McDermott Foundation.

Lamplighter celebrates Lunar New Year!

Students gathered for several Lion Dances and an assembly today to learn about Lunar New Year, a tradition in Asian cultures that commemorates family, gratitude, and wishes for health and prosperity. The Lion Dance is said to bring good luck for the year ahead!

Thank you to the for sharing this tradition at Lamplighter! And, thank you to the Cultural Awareness Committee of the Lamplighter Parents’ Association for bringing the fun festivities to our School!

On Monday evening, Lamplighter hosted the second event in this year’s Dolores Evans Speaker Series, a signature program at the School for more than 20 years. We welcomed New York Times bestselling authors Susan Magsamen and Ivy Ross, co-authors of “Your Brain on Art: How the Arts Transform Us,” for an educational and inspiring evening.

These impressive thought leaders shared their research-based findings about the importance of the arts on our brains and bodies, and how we can use this knowledge to improve our health and communities. Thank you to our guests across the DFW metroplex for joining us on campus for this signature event!

The Alumni Council is now accepting nominations for the 2024-2025 Lamplighter Spirit Award! Take a moment to nominate someone you know who embodies the spirit of Lamplighter. Third graders started the day with a service project for . Students worked together to assemble snack bags for families affected by homelessness. This biannual project provides Lamplighter students with an opportunity to engage in hands-on community outreach for a local organization.

Alumni recently gathered for a one-of-kind event at . Lamplighter alumna Carlyn Ray ’92 led a glass blowing demonstration in her studio at for a group of fellow Lamplighter alumni. The piece designed during the demonstration will be donated to the upcoming Auction, “Lamplighter Loves the 90s.”

Ms. Ray specializes in custom, site-specific glass art installations. She also shares her creative passion through Dallas Glass Art, where people take classes and enjoy the experience of making their own pieces. In addition, Ms. Ray is active in Art Reaching Out, a non-profit she founded to provide STEAM programs for females and at-risk student groups.

One of Ray’s custom glass installations can be found at The Lamplighter School! During the 2019-2020 school year, she collaborated with the Lamplighter Class of 2020 to design a glass art project which eventually became a permanent outdoor installation in the Jonsson Garden on campus.

Lamplighter students participated in the School’s annual Half Day of Service, honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., today. Each grade level engaged in a service project that supports local non-profit organizations.

Pre-K students assembled bags of food for Feed the City, an initiative of Tango Charities that helps fight hunger in the Dallas metroplex. Kindergarteners learned about ways to support animal shelters, and explored “wants” versus “needs.”

Grades 1 - 4 partnered with the Visiting Nurses Association to take part in projects for Meals on Wheels.This included decorating placemats and brown bags for the “Healthy Snack Bag” program, and writing thank you and goodwill cards to seniors and volunteers.

Today’s projects are part of the School’s year-round social-emotional curriculum that is fundamental to the Lamplighter program.

Alumni Days continued this week with outstanding presentations by our talented alumni! Our students have learned so much this week about entrepreneurship as well as careers in the publishing, legal, and oil & gas industries.

Lamplighter’s annual Alumni Days kicked off today with two alumni visitors on campus.

Kathryn Nelson ’93 visited a Pre-K classroom and read stories to the students. Together, they discussed their favorite children’s books that they enjoy at home and in their classroom.

Maggie Thomas ’05 presented to all first grade students about what it means to be an entrepreneur. Students learned about the important steps needed to start a company, and brainstormed ideas for a coloring and football business.
