It's HOT!! We had some rain and cooler weather in July, but the "Dog Days" of August are here. Sirius, the Dog Star, is very bright and close to the sun this time of year. Ancient astronomers thought it added to the sun's heat, and I'm pretty sure I believe them!! When it gets ahead of the sun in the mornings, we'll start to cool off, but that's still weeks away,

Evening skies: Venus is hard to see as it is close behind the sun at sunset. It will slowly get higher and become a bright Evening Star as fall arrives! The summer stars of Sagittarius, Scorpio, and the Summer Triangle are high in the sky. They'll drop lower into the west as we get closer to fall. Perseid Meteor Shower is a late night show August 12/13th and could be good if you are away from the city!

Full Moon is on the 19th.

Morning skies: 3 Planets in the morning: Saturn is setting in the southwest, Jupiter and Mars are a bright pair in the east! Orion is just behind them, rising ahead of the sun.

At the Quarry and around town: Chimney Swifts fill the air, cicadas are singing, Green Herons are hunting.

You never know what you'll see: photo is of a Polyphemus Moth at the Quarry, a wild looking guy! He showed up during orientation years ago.
School starts soon, ready or not, but don't forget to get outside and look around when you can! Always a good thing to do, in spite of the heat!!

Happy May, Eagles! See what's ahead for the month in Mr. Lutken's Sky Watch Report below.

April began with the spectacular Solar Eclipse! Hope everyone had a good view!

Big Thunderstorms and exams are arriving, so get ready for May! Here are some things to look for:

Evening Skies :
Jupiter leads the setting winter stars. In May they'll drop out of sight until they show up in the morning late summer. Spring stars are high: The Big Dipper, Leo, and Arcturus wheel overhead through the night.

Full Moon is on the 23rd.

Morning Skies:

Mars and Saturn are low in the southeast, They'll get higher and more visible this month. The Summer Triangle, Sagittarius and Scorpio rise just ahead of them.

At the Quarry or around town:
Cottonwood seeds are drifting like snow, and Flycatchers are starting to show up over the fields. Watch for Barn Swallows, Herons, Sandpipers, Kingfishers!

Photo is a Common Loon, a beautiful winter visitor. He’s laughing his head off at something, probably us and all our problems!

Let’s listen to him and get outdoors!! PKL

Happy spring, Eagles! See below for Mr. Lutken's April Sky Watch.

Spring in Texas is off-balance, crazy, and beautiful. It can be hot, dusty, cold, windy, stormy, and sunny all in one day!! Bluebonnets are blooming, birds are arriving and departing! It's an active time of year!

*Total Solar Eclipse* April 8th! It starts around 12:30, totality for 4 minutes around 1:40, and then ends around 2:40! A pinhole in cardboard will project the event on any light surface before and after totality! Be prepared with eclipse glasses and cross your fingers for clear skies!

Evening skies: Jupiter leads the winter stars down in the west after sunset. It's the best time of year to watch the Big Dipper circling the northern sky. Use the pointer stars (the two at the front of the cup) to find the North Star, or follow the arc of the Dipper's handle south to the bright star Arcturus, the Bear Hunter.

Full Moon is on the 25th.

Morning skies: Mars, and Saturn are very low in the east just before sunrise. The Summer Triangle is overhead, coming up earlier every day!

Quarry : Lots of bird activity right now: Ducks, Swallows, Kingfishers, and all kinds of beautiful Herons. Photo is a pair of Little Blue Herons, Quarry visitors one rainy April, years ago!

Head outside and take in the voices of spring. They can help you keep your balance!! PKL
