Studying in Spain! 🇪🇸

Every summer, we send multiple groups of students out on trips across the world to study, serve, and learn through immersion in a new culture. Most recently, a group of students from Gunn Hall went to Spain to volunteer with a local school.

Here is what junior Lizeth had to say about her experience:
“My experience attending the Gunn Hall End of the Year Trip is one that I will never forget. We got to immerse ourselves in a completely different culture and visit some of the most important historical sites in Spain. It was amazing getting to experience new culture, food, history, and architecture as we explored the mediterranean coast. It also helped me realize the power that we hold as believers and our mission to make God’s name known across all nations.”

Pursuing Her Passion: Meet Alumna Reese Jay Manning 06/13/2024

Recent alumna Reese Jay Manning ('23) had the opportunity to intern at the Academy of Country Music in Nashville for the marketing team this spring while working on her MBA in Marketing. As part of her internship, she attended the Academy of Country Music Awards, where she assisted in interviewing major country music artists and worked behind the scenes on the red carpet and performances.

Reese's passion for marketing began in the classroom at DBU, where she learned about digital and brand marketing. When she looks back at her time as a student, she recounts the impact of her Promotional Strategy class and being on the Cross Country and Track teams. Now, she is taking all her knowledge and experience to a new position at Apple Leisure Group.

Read more about Reese and the impact that her education at DBU had on launching her career here:

Dr. Russell Moore Speaks at the 2nd Baptist Distinctives Lecture Series 06/03/2024

This semester, we had the honor of hosting Dr. Russell Moore to speak at the 2nd Baptist Distinctives Lecture Series, an event held to teach people what it means to be a Baptist and pay homage to the leaders who came before us.

Dr. Russell Moore is the Editor-in-Chief of Christianity Today and the author of Losing Our Religion, an Altar Call for Evangelical America. He previously served as the President of the Ethical and Religious Liberty Commission and was also named one of POLITICO Magazine's Top 50 Most Influential Makers in Washington in 2017.

At the event, Dr. Moore spoke on Mark 5:1-20 and explained how Jesus sought out a demon-possessed man who had lost his personal identity and saved him. Dr. Moore related this story to society today, saying that society has caused some Baptist rituals and distinctives to subside, but the ones that have prevailed are the essentials. With this, Dr. Moore emphasized the importance of Christ-centered community because a community apart from God is destined to fail on its own. Therefore, we must weaken tribalism in our society with true community.

Dr. Moore used his closing remarks to encourage attendees to continue treating each member of the congregation, regardless of their age, as an essential member of the body of the Church, saying, "The message that Baptists should have, in the 21st century, plagued by belonging to everyone and thus belonging to no one, people who are wondering if I am 100% dedicated to these people and do I have to prove it by hating a certain group, or am I instead a person and not just a cog in some machine. The Baptist movement has a great deal to contribute if we can remember who we are. And if we can say, 'You must be born again.' Jesus loves not just us but me. If we can retain this message, we will be able to detox from a really toxic time."

At the inaugural National Collegiate Digital Marketing Championship, DBU marketing students placed second out of some of the top schools in the nation! In the entire competition, one of our own, Akobir Hadjihanov, was the number one top-performing student.

This competition was hosted by Baylor University's Business School.
The DBU team members included Alec McKisic, Karsyn Bennet, Akobir Hodjihanov, Rachel Gerich, and Kaden Vaughan. They were selected by DBU Professors Sandra Crawford Williamson and Dr. Kyle Allison and coached by Dr. Allison. Some of the challenges included preparing a pitch on key performance indicators for a client, a quiz of cognitive questions on digital marketing, and managing a digital advertisement budget.

Reflecting on the team's success, Alec McKisic mentioned, "The team succeeded because we know our education doesn't stop in the classroom. I don't know any other school with professors caring about their students outside of class like DBU. DBU is full of students overflowing with Kingdom values and a responsibility to do something with the education God has given them at DBU."

Congratulations to all of our new graduates! We cannot wait to celebrate even more of you tomorrow!

To the graduating seniors,

Today is the day you have worked towards for the last four years. It is the culmination of hard work, dedication, and the support of others that has led you to this moment.

You came to college in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, unsure of the future ahead, and are now leaving full of hope and expectation of the possibilities that await you. Over the past four years, you have grown as a student, believer, friend, and professional. You learned inside and outside the classroom what it means to be a servant leader and how to serve God in every aspect of your life and field of study. Now, you have the opportunity to apply everything you learned on the Hill.

As you go on to pursue your calling and career, we are praying the scripture Numbers 6:24-26 over you: "May the Lord bless you and keep you; The Lord make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace."

Remember that wherever life takes you, you have been equipped for this and can stand firm in the truth that you are a child of God. We hope you will go out and do the work the Lord has called you to do: making disciples of every nation.

Congratulations, DBU class of 2024! We are proud of you and can't wait to see what you do next. And, remember, once a Patriot, always a Patriot.

DBU has recently announced a new engineering program agreement with Baylor University. Last week, Dr. Linda Livingstone, Baylor President; Dr. Nancy Brickhouse, Baylor Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs; Dr. Adam Wright, DBU President; and Dr. Norma Hedin, DBU Provost, met to sign the agreement.

This agreement will allow DBU students to transfer their undergraduate course credits to Baylor to complete their engineering degree through the School of Engineering and Computer Science.

Dr. Wright emphasized the significance of this partnership between DBU and Baylor's Engineering programs, saying, "There is also a broader reach that will be achieved for DBU internationally and domestically as a result of this partnership, providing more access to the incredible resources that you have at Baylor, the lab spaces, the influence, and the commitment to producing socially responsible engineers that will make an incredible contribution for Christ and His kingdom. I'm filled with gratitude for this collaborative partnership with Baylor."

We are excited about this partnership and the future of engineering at DBU. Read more about this agreement and the opportunities it will provide to engineering students here: https://www.dbu.edu/news/2024/05/baylor-dbu-engineering-agreement.html.

Congratulations to Susie Cassel for being named DBU Staff Member of the Year at the recent Staff Appreciation Luncheon!

Susie serves at DBU as the Director of International Student Services. In her role at DBU, she meets with students and discusses how she can help make their DBU experience the best possible. She desires every student to grow academically, socially, financially, and spiritually. Reflecting on her role at DBU, Susie mentions, "I love that I have the opportunity to be a similar blessing to the students who come to DBU. It's not just about helping them navigate a new culture and learn to buy their groceries, but about helping DBU be a place where they feel welcomed, celebrated, valued, wanted, and loved."

Susie's passion for international students developed when she lived in Lithuania for three years. The Lord used this experience to show her to rely on God and the kindness of strangers to adapt to a new culture. "I love that I have the opportunity to be a similar blessing to the students who come to DBU. It's not just about helping them navigate a new culture and learn to buy their groceries, but about helping DBU be a place where they feel welcomed, celebrated, valued, wanted, and loved," remarks Susie.
