I've been doing lots of AI workshops and I get asked a lot: "how do I get students to do the work if AI can do it so easily?" Luckily. I wrote a book about this (Teaching Change) which is all about how to motivate the brain (in your body!) to do the hard work that provides the actual benefit.
We all understand that watching someone do push-ups is not that useful, but we have to make the case that this is also true of intellectual push-ups. Too often students mistake the product as the goal, when it is really the process.

I’m in Oklahoma kicking off the transformative learning conference at the university of central Oklahoma.

We’re excited to announce that our Keynote Speaker will be José Antonio Bowen! He will be speaking about, "Thinking with A.I. and the Future of Assessment."
The excitement (and panic) surrounding A.I. is shattering expectations around assessment (and everything else), while challenging us to build more future-proof and inclusive classrooms. AI is changing working and thinking: as jobs and the way humans do thinking tasks change, how will our curriculum respond? AI is also changing how we think about average. If AI can produce consistent "C" work than we need to update our policies around grading. AI is even changing creativity. Together, we will examine the skills and content that will matter most in this new age, why articulation of ‘quality’ is essential and how to lead productive campus conversations about responding to AI. Focusing on the tangible, attendees will also learn techniques to transform assignments and assessments to motivate and engage students by placing greater emphasis on the process and experience of learning.
José Antonio Bowen has won teaching awards at Stanford and Georgetown, was Dean at Miami and Southern Methodist University and President of Goucher College….

In my latest book , I argue for an education (both why and how) that is largely about teaching students how to think and change. ChatGPT has only amplified this claim.
At the same time as thinking clearly and for yourself has become more important, we have a new tool that will think for you. As this students writes today, faculty are naive about how students are actually using ChatGPT:
"As any former student knows, one of the main challenges of writing an essay is just thinking through the subject matter and coming up with a strong, debatable claim. With one snap of the fingers and almost zero brain activity, I suddenly had one.:" (The specifics in the article are good.)
We need to change our assignments, our incentives and our process. This students has correctly identified the future--we will be working WITH AI. I use AI this way all the time too. We need to work with employers to imagine the thinking and work skill of the future and teach students when they need AI help and when they need to use their own brains.
Opinion | I’m a Student. You Have No Idea How Much We’re Using ChatGPT. No professor or software could ever pick up on it.
