Lumin East Dallas Community School

I can speak for all of us at Lumin Education when I say that our hearts are broken by what happened in Uvalde, Texas yesterday. Those children are our children. Those parents are our parents. Those teachers and school staff are who we are.

This is the time of year for celebration. This is the time of year for reflecting on all the beautiful accomplishments that children, parents, and staff, working together, have achieved. Instead, we are left with the taste of ashes, the horror of losses too great to be imagined, and the tragedy of another mass shooting that could have, should have, been averted.

This heartbreak is compounded by the multitude of similar tragedies inflicted on the innocent … shootings that have impacted people from all walks of life, all races, all religions. There have been so many shootings that it is impossible to respond to each of them. Each of the victims is one of our brothers or sisters. Each of the devastated family members is part of our family.

Where do we turn for consolation in the midst of this agony? Our Lumin community members also reflect the diversity of being from many walks of life, many races, and many religions. Our diversity is our strength. At the same time, we all have one thing in common: We are working to create beautiful, healthy environments for our children, with a vision of those children growing up to create a more beautiful, peaceful world. Whether you are supporting Lumin financially, or as a staff member, maintaining Lumin facilities, tracking Lumin finances, coaching Lumin parents, or educating Lumin children, you are part of the solution and part of the hope for our world.

As imperfect as we each are, every member of our Lumin community is creating a powerful, positive ripple effect on the rest of the world. Lumin’s work has been building a better world for 44 years and has touched the lives of thousands of children and their families. Take heart in the work that you do and the gifts that you are giving our world.

For inspiration I have pasted below a quote from Mahatma Gandhi who, after meeting Dr. Maria Montessori, spoke at the Montessori Training College in London in 1931. I am grateful to each of you for helping Lumin be part of fulfilling Mahatma Gandhi’s vision.

Lumin EDCS alum, Jeffrey Bennett, graduated from Booker T Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in June. He started classes this week at California Institute of the Arts majoring in Fine Arts – Piano Performance. Have a wonderful school year, Jeffrey!
