For years, I have encouraged you to listen to your body, honor your capacity, rest without guilt, and refuse to abandon yourself while keeping everything and everyone else going.

Now I have to practice what I teach.

Over the past several weeks, I have been navigating a significant and unexpected health situation that has changed my day-to-day life so, for a season, I am stepping away from Pink Girl Teaches but before I do, I need to honor what God allowed us to build.

From the REBUILD Conference to workshops, retreats, books, journals, the PGT Academy, podcasts, When Queens Convene Bible Study, and The Healing Lounge, we created spaces where survivors could learn, heal, worship, laugh, cry, connect, and imagine life beyond narcissistic abuse.

But PGT became more than content, events, programs, or resources.

We became a community.

A place where people could finally exhale and realize, I am not crazy. I am not alone. Someone understands.

It has been one of the greatest honors of my life to serve you. I will never take lightly the stories you trusted me with, the testimonies, messages, hugs, people who traveled to sit in rooms with us, or those who joined us from around the world.

Pink Girl Teaches has always been about Building Bridges to REBUILD Lives After Narcissistic Abuse.

And my goodness… we built.

I don’t have a return date. I need the freedom to focus on my health, get answers, and establish a new rhythm and yes, The Road Back to Me is still coming. I will complete the book, but I am postponing the official launch and promotion until my health and capacity allow.

The irony is not lost on me. I am writing The Road Back to Me while having to find my own road back to myself.

So I’m going to practice what I’ve taught, take care of Joy, and let God meet me here.

This isn’t goodbye. It’s see you later.

Because sometimes the Road Back to Me requires actually taking the road.

“A little one shall become a thousand, and a small one a strong nation. I, the LORD, will hasten it in its time.”
Isaiah 60:22 NKJV

You can leave the relationship and still live like you’re in it.

You can block the number.
Change the locks.
Go no contact.

And still wake up bracing for something that is no longer coming.

Because your body did not receive the memo that you are safe now.

For years, survival taught you to study faces, anticipate conflict, overexplain, keep everyone else comfortable, and prepare for what might happen next.

Then you got out.

But your nervous system kept doing the job it learned to do.

That is why healing after narcissistic abuse cannot only be about understanding what they did. Eventually, you have to understand what surviving it taught your body to do.

Some of what you have called your personality may actually be survival patterns that stayed long after the danger left.

Now you get to teach your body something new:

We are not there anymore.

Leaving was only the beginning.

Now begins the road back to you.

If you are ready to move beyond surviving and begin restoring safety, identity, and trust within yourself, stay close.

The Road Back to Me begins here.

August has arrived, and perhaps the work before you now is not about escaping. Perhaps it is about learning how to live in the freedom you prayed for.

Leaving Egypt and getting Egypt out of your nervous system are two different journeys.

You can be free and still flinch. Safe and still scan the room. Loved and still expect abandonment. Resting and still feel guilty for doing nothing.

Freedom does not immediately erase what survival taught you.

For a long time, your body learned to anticipate danger, read the room, and prepare for what might happen next. Those responses helped you survive a place you no longer live in.

So when they appear again, do not assume you have gone backward.

Sometimes healing is recognizing an old survival response and realizing you no longer have to obey it.

Your body is learning what your spirit already knows:

We don’t live there anymore.

You already crossed the sea.

Now, learn the rhythm of freedom.

Welcome to August, Builder. đź©·

For years, we have spoken about the emotional wounds left by narcissistic abuse. We have acknowledged the grief, the confusion, the shattered identity, and the long road back to safety. Those conversations matter. They always will.

But healing invites us to widen the conversation.

Trauma is not experienced by the heart alone. It is carried by the body as well.

Chronic stress has a way of settling into places we never expected. It can influence the nervous system, disrupt sleep, affect hormones, alter digestion, impact blood pressure, and researchers continue to explore how prolonged stress may influence immune function and long-term health.

This does not mean that trauma guarantees disease. It does mean that the body should not be ignored while the soul is being restored.

For too long, many survivors have become experts at extending compassion to everyone except themselves. We pray for others. We encourage others. We show up for others. Yet we neglect the very body that has faithfully carried us through every battle.

Healing asks something different.

👉🏾 Go to therapy.
👉🏾 See your doctor.
👉🏾 Keep your appointments.
👉🏾 Get the labs.
👉🏾 Rest without guilt.
👉🏾 Nourish your body.
👉🏾 Pray without ceasing.

These are not competing acts of faith. They are expressions of it. Scripture teaches us that our bodies are a trust from God. Caring for them is not fear. It is stewardship.

So if God has brought you into this season, trust that He will also walk with you through it and when your testimony is written, may it tell more than the story of a healed heart.

May it also tell the story of a woman or man who learned to care for the body that carried her through the storm.

The Nervous System Made Me Do It is coming to YouTube Live on Sunday, September 6.

We’re unpacking the survival responses behind the decisions that shaped our lives, including the ways childhood experiences and narcissistic abuse can train the nervous system to remain in survival mode long after the danger has passed.

We’ll talk about childhood impacts, trauma responses, nervous system regulation, healing, and the road back to yourself.

You survived what happened. Now it’s time to understand what survival taught your body to do.

The wilderness has often been misunderstood.

We tend to think of it as God’s response to failure, as though He led Israel into barren places to make them suffer. But the wilderness was never meant to destroy them.

It was meant to transform them.

For generations, Egypt had taught them that survival depended on Pharaoh. Every meal, every resource, every certainty flowed from the very system that enslaved them. Though they had left Egypt, their hearts still believed their survival depended upon it.

God had to teach them something greater than freedom, He had to teach them trust.

The wilderness became a classroom where old beliefs were quietly dismantled. Every morning invited dependence. Every unanswered question became an opportunity to discover that God could provide what Egypt never could: safety without bo***ge.

Healing often follows the same path.

There are seasons when life feels unfamiliar, painfully quiet, and uncertain. We mistake the absence of chaos for the absence of God because crisis has become the rhythm our nervous system knows best.

Peace can often feels uncomfortable before it feels like home, not because peace is unsafe but because your nervous system has not lived there long enough to recognize it.

The wilderness was never Israel’s punishment, it was God’s preparation.

Perhaps your wilderness is not a place of abandonment. Perhaps it is where God is teaching your soul and your nervous system, that you no longer have to survive.

Freedom has a way of revealing what captivity concealed.

Only days after the waters of the Red Sea closed behind them, the children of Israel began speaking of Egypt with surprising affection. They remembered the bread, the routines, and the certainty of each day. The wilderness, with all of its unanswered questions, felt heavier than the chains they had left behind.

Memory had become selective.

The whips faded into the background. The oppression became less vivid. The cries that had once risen to heaven for deliverance were replaced by memories of what felt familiar.

Trauma often does the same.

The nervous system is not drawn to what is healthy; it is drawn to what it recognizes. Familiarity can masquerade as safety, even when it has been the source of our deepest wounds. The body will often choose a predictable pain over an unfamiliar peace simply because it knows how to survive there.

This is why so many survivors question their decision after leaving. They wonder if it was really that bad. They miss the person who wounded them. They grieve the future they imagined more than the reality they endured. Some even feel the pull to return, not because captivity was good, but because freedom asks them to trust a life they have never known.

This is not evidence that healing has failed.

It is evidence that the nervous system is learning a new definition of safety.

God never intended for Israel to return to Egypt.

His purpose was far greater than changing their location. He was restoring a people whose identity had been shaped by generations of captivity. The journey through the wilderness was never about making them suffer. It was about teaching them that they no longer belonged to what had once enslaved them.

Healing asks the same of us.

It does not demand that we never remember Egypt. It simply teaches us not to build a home there.

Some roads feel familiar because they have been traveled many times.

That does not mean they lead us home.

Freedom had already been given, they simply did not know how to live like people who were free.

For more than four hundred years, Egypt shaped the children of Israel. It taught them to survive by fear, to obey without question, and to measure every decision by what would keep them alive another day. Survival was no longer something they did; it had become the way they understood themselves.

Then God brought them out.

Yet bringing Israel out of Egypt was only the first miracle. The second was teaching them how to think, trust, and live as a people no longer defined by captivity.

Trauma leaves us with the same dilemma.

Long after the abuse has ended, the nervous system often continues to live by yesterday’s rules. We apologize when we have done nothing wrong. We explain ourselves before anyone has asked. We mistake hypervigilance for discernment, guilt for humility, and self-abandonment for love.

These are not personality traits.

They are survival strategies.

Healing is the sacred work of separating who you became to survive from who God created you to be. It is the slow realization that your identity was never your trauma, your fear, or your coping mechanisms. Those were adaptations to captivity, not the blueprint of your life.

Israel had already been set free.

Now they had to learn how to live free.

So do we.

Freedom is not merely leaving captivity.

It is remembering who you are once captivity no longer gets to tell your story.
