What do you want to gain from this school year?

Our Upper Elementary students started with that question—and their answers went far beyond academics: knowledge, yes, but also cooperation, discipline, confidence and leadership.

In a world where information is available in seconds and AI can answer almost any question, education has to be about more than what a child can memorize.

Can they work with others? Listen well? Lead? Exercise self-discipline? Treat people with respect? Take responsibility for the community they’re part of?

At TKG Academy, those aren’t extras. They’re part of the education.

So our students didn’t simply receive a list of classroom rules. They created a mission together, turned more than 30 ideas into 10 shared agreements, and chose the commitments they want to live by this year.

Because the people our children become matters just as much as what they know.

In Sadhana class, our students practice Japa every day. Recently, they had the opportunity to make the tools for that practice their own—tie-dyeing their own bead bags and stringing their own counter beads.

It was a fun, hands-on activity, but also something more: an opportunity to build connection and ownership around a practice that is part of their everyday life at TKG Academy—and one they can carry with them long after they leave the classroom.

In Sadhana class, our students practice Japa every day. This week, they had the opportunity to make the tools for that practice their own: tie-dyeing their own bead bags and stringing their own counter beads!

It was a fun, hands-on activity, but also an opportunity to build connection and ownership around a practice that is part of their everyday life at TKG Academy... and one they can carry with them long after they leave the classroom.

Janmāṣṭamī at TKG Academy 💙

Our students spent the day preparing for Kṛṣṇa’s appearance—cutting fruit, making garlands, dressing the Deities, decorating the pavilion, singing kīrtan and offering abhiṣeka.

They served Kṛṣṇa together and made the celebration their own.

Their festival. Their service. Their offering. 🌸

The watermills are built! 💧⚙️

But getting there took much more than following a set of instructions.

Our Upper Elementary students worked through trial and error as they designed, built, tested, adjusted, and tried again. And along the way, the engineering challenge became an exercise in something just as important: learning how to work together.

Students practiced listening to one another, delegating tasks fairly, making decisions as a group, and compromising when they had different ideas about what to do next.

Now their designs have become working watermills—and the investigation isn’t over yet.

Next question: Can they make those wheels actually do some work?

Science doesn’t begin with memorizing the right answer. It begins with learning how to observe, ask questions, test ideas, and understand why something works.

Our Upper Elementary students are studying how energy moves and flows through systems. Last week, they took their notebooks outside to identify evidence of energy at work in the world around them.

This week, the investigation continues. Working in small groups, students are designing and building functioning watermills to explore how natural energy can be harnessed to perform work.

The science is real. So is the collaboration, problem-solving, experimentation, and critical thinking happening along the way.

This is what meaningful learning looks like.

During his visit to TKG Academy, HH Bhakti Padma Saurabh Swami Maharaj shared a powerful reminder of Śrīla Prabhupāda’s vision for education and the importance of gurukulas in shaping the future.

He said:

“If we put even 10% of our energy—our money and our manpower—into opening these schools and gurukulas, then the face of the world will change.”

TKG Academy exists to help carry forward Śrīla Prabhupāda’s vision for gurukula by nurturing children in Kṛṣṇa consciousness and providing an education rooted in spiritual values.

Our heartfelt gratitude to HH Bhakti Padma Saurabh Swami Maharaj for blessing our school with his visit and for reminding us of this vital part of Śrīla Prabhupāda’s mission. 🙏

Our Lower Elementary students recently completed their Ratha Yatra Cart Unit—an interdisciplinary project combining Bhakti studies, science, math, social studies, and language arts.

Students explored the cultural heritage of Jagannatha Puri, studied simple machines and structural design, measured wheel diameter and radius using real-world geometry, and worked together to build functional carts for Festival of Joy.

From wheel alignment to canopy construction, every detail required teamwork, problem-solving, and initiative.

This is what meaningful hands-on learning looks like—students connecting knowledge across subjects while building something with purpose.

Our 3rd–8th graders visited White Rock Lake, home to one of the few nesting pairs of bald eagles in the area — Nick and Nora.

Most of the students didn’t believe an eagle was actually there. It was tucked deep in the nest, guarding soon-to-hatch eggs while its partner hunted.

We waited.
We scanned the trees.
We mistook hawks and vultures for eagles.

And just as we were about to leave… we saw it.

A lesson in patience.
A lesson in observation.
A reminder that some things are only visible if you slow down long enough to notice.
