🛩️ Our field trip to the Frontiers of Flight Museum 🛩️ The Young 4’s and 4’s & 5’s went on a field trip to the Frontiers of Flight Museum. It was a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the hands-on exhibits. Our lessons about the moon phases with Oreo cookies prepared the children for our visit to the moon and stars in the planetarium. The children were introduced to the vocabulary used when talking about space with words such as atmosphere, orbit, hurricanes, planets, astronaut, satellite, and telescope.

Celebrating Dr. Seuss’ birthday! We joined in the nationwide reading celebration of the beloved children’s author Dr. Seuss today on his birthday. We wore our fun socks, we listened to Cat in the Hat, played Dr. Seuss bingo, and made our hats. A fun fact to know is that Dr. Seuss wrote Green Eggs and Ham after he was challenged to write a book using only 50 words. We hope you will continue to read the many Dr. Seuss books available. 🌙✨Learning about Ramadan✨🌙

Our school joins with our families to celebrate special holidays from their cultures. This month, all of our classes are learning about Ramadan through books, cooking, and art.

Ramadan is the month of fasting observed by Muslims around the world. It begins with the shining white crescent moon. The celebration lasts for a month, also known as “The Month of Mercy.” This is the holiest month for Muslims. A time of prayer, family, community, good deeds, and fasting from sunup to sundown.

When the beautiful crescent moon returns, the Eid festival begins, marking the end of the fast.

🧧🐴Welcoming the Year of the Horse 🐴🧧 The children from the Co-op celebrated the beginning days of the Lunar New Year by making fried rice, reading Lion Dancer by Kate Waters and Madeline Slovenz-Low, enjoying their fortune cookies, painting lanterns and Chinese characters, and taking home a red envelope.

A special thank you to Serena Othman for sharing the beauty of the Chinese language and modeling a traditional kimono. The students also listened to the book Cat and Rat: The Legend of the Chinese Zodiac by Ed Young. The twelve animals that successfully competed in the Great Race were given a designated year in the Chinese Zodiac. This year is the Year of the Horse.

Ketchup to the rescue! Our scientists celebrated Presidents’ Day by looking at pennies under a magnifying glass. Clearly, some of the pennies were shiny and some of them dull. Could they bring back the shine of the dull pennies?

The pennies were placed in three solutions — vinegar, detergent, and ketchup — to try to bring back the original shine of the copper. The acidity from the tomatoes and vinegar in the ketchup breaks down the copper oxidation that makes the pennies dull and dark. The ketchup brought back the shine!

🧯🐶Sparky’s fire safety visit 🐶🧯 Sparky, the fire dog, came to visit our students today to teach them about fire safety. They learned to listen for a smoke alarm, to talk with their families about their fire escape plan, and to practice the plan. Sparky showed the children how to get low and move under the smoke. He also reminded them never to use matches or lighters and to stay away from hot things. It was a fun, interactive time learning about fire safety. The children also learned a few things about Sparky. He likes pizza and loves to play hide and seek.
