At Shelton, theatre is about more than performances. It is about helping students discover their voice, build confidence and prepare for future success.

That mission recently earned national recognition as Anné Hughes received an Honorable Mention for the 2026 Excellence in Theatre Education Award presented by the Tony Awards.

Students like Deja Jackson exemplify that impact. After portraying Donkey in Shelton’s production of Shrek, Deja went on to earn a degree in broadcast journalism from the University of North Texas.

Congratulations to both Mrs. Hughes and Deja for inspiring us with their achievements and dedication. 🎭🎓💙

During Shelton’s May 16 Graduation, Upper School Reading Teacher Kim Self shared a special moment with graduating senior Owen Myers — a reflection of the meaningful bond formed between Shelton teachers and students.

Kim, a Certified Academic Language Therapist and Licensed Dyslexia Therapist, taught Owen in reading therapy during his freshman and sophomore years. Reflecting on his growth, she shared: “He made a total 180 degree turn after his freshman year.”

Kim said, "Reading is really tough for a lot of students so we as teachers look for and provide them with strategies that can and will change their lives.”

Owen plans to attend The University of Mississippi this fall.

Congratulations, Owen!

Despite decades of research, many dyslexic students remain unidentified and unsupported.

The Shelton Evaluation Center works to change that — offering detailed evaluations that help families and schools understand how each child learns best.

Early identification and intervention can change the course of a child’s life.

🌟 Great theatre teachers inspire students long after the curtain closes.

Congratulations to Anné Hughes for receiving an Honorable Mention for the 2026 Excellence in Theatre Education Award presented by the Tony Awards.

Under Hughes’ leadership, Shelton students have discovered confidence, creativity and a passion for performance. One of those students is Charlie Raynaud, who captivated audiences as Ren McCormack in Footloose and Conrad Birdie in Bye Bye Birdie.

Charlie now studies theatre at Texas State University — continuing a journey that began on the Shelton stage. 🎭

Big applause for Anné Hughes on receiving an Honorable Mention for the 2026 Excellence in Theatre Education Award presented by the Tony Awards and sponsored by Carnegie Mellon University.

For nearly three decades, Hughes has helped Shelton students grow in confidence, creativity and self-expression through theatre and the arts.

That impact can be seen in students like Shelton sophomore Rachel Shoup, who played Ursula in Shelton’s 2026 production of The Little Mermaid.

“The Shelton Fine Arts department has given me and other kids an incredible safe space to express ourselves freely and to put in the time and energy and effort without feeling defined by a number or a grade,” Rachel said.

Congratulations to Mrs. Hughes and all of the beautiful people of Shelton Theatre! 💙✨
