Our chapter is full of special people and today the spotlight is on our treasured treasurer, Christina Leano!
Christina, how did you get started in the Suzuki world?
"My mother was introduced to the Suzuki Method by her sister-in-law, whose son was learning violin. She was so impressed with my young cousin that she soon enrolled my two older siblings. Not wishing to be left out, I made my interest known by frequently picking up my siblings' violin and trying to copy them. I was enrolled when I was four and have been playing ever since."
What's your main instrument? Do you play any others?
"My main instrument is violin, but I do enjoy playing viola as well."
What is your teaching life like? What do you do and where do you teach?
"I have a small studio in Bedford, Texas. I have an outdoor office in my backyard where I teach all my private lessons. I enjoy teaching weekly Suzuki group classes where my students can bond and be inspired by each other. Every semester we hold a group and solo recital and then enjoy pizza and other snacks in celebration of their hard work.
I often do a listening and practice challenge with my students, with rewards for those who hit certain marks. Sometimes we do challenges where we have a poster on the wall with the students' names. Every week, they get to place stickers by their name with how many times they have practiced or listened. There's even some friendly competition, which motivates in a very good way!"
What do you do when not teaching to unwind?
"I like to sew, draw, and crochet when I'm feeling creative. I also like to cook and play board games with my family. I like to sing (and occasionally play violin) in my church choir on weekends as well!"
What's your favorite thing about being a Suzuki teacher?
"My favorite thing is seeing students realize just how much they can do on their own and take ownership of their violin and their music, and move from doing lessons because it's what's expected to doing them because they're loving the music."
