was organized in 1940 in the home of Soror Lucille Hicks Sheppard in Houston, Texas under the leadership of Soror Mary Scales Greenwood, who served as Regional Syntaktes from 1940 - 1948. During her tenure, Soror Greenwood organized the most chapters in this region. Prior to the organization of the Southwestern Region, six educators were interested in furthering finer womanhood, scholarship, commu

nity service and leadership. As a result of their vision, Gamma Sigma Chapter was chartered in Houston, Texas, on April 28, 1928. The charter members were Marie Jefferson, Johnnie M. Johnson, Ola Mitchell, Marjorie Alexander, Johnnie Y. Rice and Catherine Roett. The first Boule held in the Southwestern Region took place in Houston, Texas, on December 27 - 29, 1938, and was hosted by Gamma Sigma Chapter.

Essence Activations | Final Activation

We closed out our weekend by partying with a purpose at our Essence of Sisterhood Brunch.

Under the umbrella of our Operation BigBookBag initiative, the Southwestern Region proudly sponsored five new-to-the-profession educators, gifting them with gift cards, literacy toolkits, school supplies, and other classroom essentials to support them as they begin their journey in education.

It was a beautiful celebration of sisterhood, service, and purpose, reminding us that when we gather, we do so with intention and impact.

This is sisterhood in action. This is service with purpose. This is Greater Service.
