Our eighth graders had a bit of a different introduction to the school year: After a week in Colorado rafting, fishing, hiking, taking on aerial park courses and heading out for a multi-day backpacking trip, they returned to campus with new experiences, stronger friendships and a fresh perspective for the year ahead. Students described the trip as an introduction to the leadership expected of eighth graders and a reminder to approach challenges with an open mind and positive attitude.

In Honors Advanced Sculpture, students are taking their first steps into working with metal through their “Copper Knot” projects.

As the final required project before moving into independent work, the assignment gives students specific materials, instructions and processes to follow as they learn the metal fabrication technique of brazing, or sweat soldering, which is specific to non-ferrous metals like copper, bronze, gold, and silver.

From there, students will have the freedom to pursue their choice of materials, ideas, and artistic focuses, taking the skills they’ve developed and putting them toward work that is uniquely their own!

Today, we celebrated the pinning of our 2026–27 Student Ambassadors!

Student Ambassadors play an important role in welcoming prospective families to ESD, giving them an authentic look at daily student life through campus tours, admission events, and conversations about their own experiences as Eagles. This year’s program includes 61 student ambassadors in grades 10–12, including a 20-member Executive Board that leads the program, mentors younger ambassadors and works alongside school leadership to create meaningful opportunities throughout the year.

Middle and Upper School students gathered in chapel for their first Eucharist of the school year, coming together in worship and reflection as a community. The services offered a meaningful opportunity to pause from the rhythm of the school day, give thanks and look toward the year ahead with intention.

In the Eucharist, we remember Christ as the bread of life. Together, we joined in prayer:

“Gracious Father, whose blessed Son Jesus Christ came down from heaven to be the true bread which gives life to the world: Evermore give us this bread, that he may live in us, and we in him; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.”

As the new school year gets underway, Middle and Upper School students gathered in chapel for Sticky Prayers, our annual opportunity to pause, reflect and look ahead.

Students were invited to consider a prayer, hope or wish for the year ahead. They reflected on how they hope to grow, where they may need guidance and what they are carrying with them into a new school year. Amid the excitement of new classes, new routines and reconnecting with friends, Sticky Prayers offered a moment to slow down and consider what each student hopes the year will hold and how they hope to grow along the way!

Eagle Camps earlier this week gave our youngest on campus a chance to settle in and say hello to their classmates and yesterday marked their official first day of school. Our Lower School Eagles returned to campus ready to learn, grow and make the most of a new year together. Welcome back, Lower School! 💙

Yesterday, we welcomed back our Middle and Upper School Eagles! Campus was full of energy as our students returned for the first day of school and began a new year together. We’re looking forward to all that this year will bring. Welcome back to the Nest! 💙

Each year, our seniors mark their last first day with a tradition all their own: the annual Senior Breakfast, a celebration in the Senior Courtyard and Hall as they officially take over their senior spaces for the year. It’s a chance to gather as a class, celebrate the start of senior year and take in the significance of the moment — their last first day at ESD. Here’s to the UN27OPPABLE Class of 2027 and all that’s ahead!

Before the first day of school, The Eagles Nest welcomed members of the ESD community back to campus with their annual pop-up featuring a variety of small businesses, including two current students and an alumna! Betty Wheeler ’27 and Estee Piccagli ’27, co-founders of Bead Rules, shared their custom charm jewelry, a business that grew from a friendship that began in an ESD after-school art class when they were just 4 years old. ESD alumna Taezja Phelan ‘19 also joined the pop-up to introduce Popkle, the teen skincare line she co-owns.
