Department of Counseling Chair Dr. Greta Davis recently represented Simmons at a reception hosted by Solomon Thomas, co-founder of The Defensive Line, an organization that works to educate the public about su***de and how to prevent it in schools, businesses and locker rooms. Thomas, a defensive tackle with the New York Jets and Coppell High School grad, took up the important cause after losing his beloved sister to su***de. Dr. Davis says she was happy to attend especially since the Dept. of Counseling is involved in training future counselors on su***de prevention and mental health care. Solomon has leveraged his position as an NFL and SuperBowl player to focus attention on de-escalating su***de numbers.

Simmons is proud of Maricela Leon, the happy recipient of a $5,000 Provost’s Summer Research Grant to support her dissertation research. Titled Exploring Stakeholders’ Perspectives on Culturally and Linguistically Sustaining Practices in Dual-Language Programs, her research focuses on diverse languaging practices and the fidelity of implementation of dual-language programs. The goal is to shed light on how administrators contribute to creating inclusive learning environments that honor students' cultural and linguistic backgrounds, potentially leading to the development of more effective dual-language programs. Congratulations Maricela!

Among the impressive graduates receiving degrees from SMU this weekend include a member of the Philadelphia Eagles 2023 Super Bowl team. Grant Calcaterra says playing in Super Bowl LVII is a lifetime highlight but the former SMU Mustang says earning his Master’s Degree in Liberal Studies is very high on that list as well. He says he's grateful to SMU Simmons and his professors. “The GLS program allows students to customize their course plans which helped tremendously with my work schedule.” He made a point to walk at graduation and encourages all collegiate athletes to finish school and get their degrees.

For some, graduation is a family affair.

This year, Carla Conley Haynes-Clowe ’74 is on the 50-year reunion planning committee, while her daughter, Catherine Haynes Bauer ’99, ’23, will be walking the stage to receive her master’s degree from SMU Simmons School of Education and Human Development.

“It’s very meaningful,” says Catherine. “SMU has meant a lot to our family.”
