In line at the grocery store, a deep voice said, “School starts soon.”
I turned and looked at the young man standing behind me.
I said, “I loved school.”
“Me, too,” he said. “When I was in fourth grade, my teacher read The Tale of Despereaux out loud to the class.”
“Oh,” I said. “I wish I could thank her.”
“I thanked her,” he said. “I’m a fourth grade teacher now and I read to my students every day.”
I shook the teacher’s hand.
I told him to tell his students “hello” from me.
I bought my groceries.
And as I walked out into the parking lot, I wept a little.
This teacher, all you teachers, reading aloud—you are changing lives, .
