On a quiet November evening in 1895, Wilhelm Röntgen was working alone in his laboratory on an experiment that seemed utterly ordinary with a vacuum tube.

He covered the tube with thick black paper to prevent any light from escaping, then turned it on.

But something strange happened.

At the far end of the laboratory, a screen coated with fluorescent material began to glow, even though the light couldn’t reach it.

It would have been easy to dismiss it as a flaw in the experiment and move on, but he paused.

He began placing various objects between the tube and the screen—paper, wood, metals... and discovered that these unknown rays could pe*****te some materials, while others absorbed them to varying degrees.

He didn’t know what they were.

So he simply named them: X-rays.

Then came the moment that changed medicine.

He placed his wife’s hand in front of the photographic plate, and when the image appeared, he didn’t see the shape of her hand as the eye perceives it, but the bones of her fingers, with her ring clearly visible around one of them.

For the first time, it became possible to see inside the human body without opening it.

Within weeks, the news spread across Europe, and soon doctors began using the rays to visualize fractures and locate foreign objects inside the body.

And just six years later, in 1901, Röntgen received the first Nobel Prize in Physics.

The most beautiful part of the story is that when Röntgen discovered these rays, he didn’t fully understand their nature, nor did he have a definitive explanation for them.

He only knew that he was faced with a real phenomenon that didn’t align with what he knew.

And so one of the greatest branches of modern medicine began with a small observation, followed by a simple question:

What is this happening right in front of me?

Sometimes scientific progress doesn’t start with the answer, but with the courage to admit that what we see, we don’t yet understand.☢️🩻

•The central X-ray beam is angled caudally (tilted down toward the feet). While classic textbooks recommend a 45 degree caudal tilt, recent clinical studies show individual anatomical variations dictate an optimalange between 25 degree to 40 degree depending on the patient's natural sacral slope...
