📚 Globally, millions of children have no books in their mother tongue.

That's why SIL created Bloom, an easy-to-use book creation platform that empowers communities to create their own reading materials.

Today there are 24,000+ books and 1,000+ languages represented in the Bloom Library!

A century-long calling, still alive today. 🗣️

Cameron Townsend founded the Summer Institute of Linguistics as a summer training program with two students.

Today, we are SIL Global — a multicultural community of local organizations working with over 1,500 language communities throughout the world.

“SIL’s training programs are a great source of blessing for us, the Waama people — materially, socially, physically, spiritually and health-wise.

"Learners who have never attended school, which is in French, are able to read the Word of God well in their native Waama language.

"Thanks to literacy, many people are now preaching in their native language, which was not possible in the past.

"This training has changed people’s hygiene practices, which helps us live healthier lives.

"Many of our students have mastered reading and writing to the point of becoming literate, passing national exams and earning diplomas.

"Many have found work in the state, allowing them to support their families.”
–Fernand Fetani, Literacy Instructor

Translation opens doors.

To Scripture. To education. To health information. To opportunity. To connection.

This International Translation Day, we celebrate the community members and language professionals whose work helps make knowledge and understanding accessible across languages.

For SIL, translation is part of a larger commitment: partnering with language communities so people can know God, learn freely, and live with dignity—in the languages they value most.

Across the globe, many Deaf students are isolated because they are without interpreters, sign language resources, or opportunities to connect with Deaf adults.

SIL works alongside Deaf communities to help change that by strengthening access to education, opportunity, and Scripture in their own language.

“I was bitter — and my schoolwork suffered too — because I hated most people. I just felt life was unfair. [Then] I learned to study scripture every day... I have learned to forgive.” –Deaf student
