Continuing our celebration of pioneering Black Physicians for - today we're profiling the great Dr. Marilyn Gaston!
From https://www.aamc.org/news-insights/celebrating-10-african-american-medical-pioneers:
"In a pivotal experience while working as an intern at Philadelphia General Hospital in 1964, Marilyn Hughes Gaston, MD, admitted a baby with a swollen, infected hand. The baby suffered from sickle cell disease, which hadn’t occurred to Gaston until her supervisor suggested the possibility. Gaston quickly committed herself to learning more about it, and eventually became a leading researcher on the disease, which affects millions of people around the world. She became deputy branch chief of the Sickle Cell Disease Branch at the National Institutes of Health, and her groundbreaking 1986 study led to a national sickle cell disease screening program for newborns. Her research showed both the benefits of screening for sickle cell disease at birth and the effectiveness of penicillin to prevent infection from sepsis, which can be fatal in children with the disease.
In 1990, Gaston became the first black female physician to be appointed director of the Health Resources and Services Administration’s Bureau of Primary Health Care. She was also the second black woman to serve as assistant surgeon general as well as achieve the rank of rear admiral in the U.S. Public Health Service. Gaston has been honored with every award that the Public Health Service bestows."
To celebrate this year, we are highlighting Black pioneers of the medical field. This is such a rich history of achievement and progress, and we want to do what we can to tell these stories!
From https://www.biography.com/scientists/patricia-bath :
"Patricia Bath was the first African American to complete a residency in ophthalmology in 1973. Two years later, she became the first female faculty member in the Department of Ophthalmology at UCLA's Jules Stein Eye Institute. In 1976, Bath co-founded the American Institute for the Prevention of Blindness, which established that 'eyesight is a basic human right.' In 1986, Bath invented the Laserphaco Probe, improving treatment for cataract patients. She patented the device in 1988, becoming the first African American female doctor to receive a medical patent.
In 1993, Bath retired from her position at the UCLA Medical Center and became an honorary member of its medical staff. That same year, she was named a 'Howard University Pioneer in Academic Medicine.'"
Celebrate with us this month as we continue to tell the stories of from the medical field!
To celebrate and the beginning of , we want to highlight Dr. Joycelyn Elders who was the first person in the state of Arkansas to become board certified in pediatric endocrinology. She was inspired to become a physician when she heard Dr. Edith Irby Jones speak at a college sorority. It was at that time Dr. Elders realized she could be a physician too.
She eventually joined the Army as a physical therapist, and once discharged, attended medical school. In 1961, she became Chief Resident at the University of Arkansas where she finished her residency, and in 1976, was named full professor of pediatrics.
In 1993, President Clinton appointed her U.S. Surgeon General, possibly her greatest achievement. Dr. Elders is just that—an elder. She is a pioneer of not just the medical community but also for Black professionals to be recognized for their contributions to their respective industries. Her advocacy for a robust s*x education, better substance-abuse prevention, and programs to promote self-esteem in children’s education forever changed the country. Her life and career paved the way for so many people afterward. Her work is a testament to a resilience of spirit that we can all be inspired by!

Happy Martin Luther King, Jr. Day! We celebrate today one of America's real founding fathers. We hope the hope that he had for a future world shapes and leads you to live an upstanding life in the face of injustice.
From his last speech on April 3, 1968, given to the sanitation workers of the Memphis Department of Public Works -
"That’s the question before you tonight. Not, 'If I stop to help the sanitation workers, what will happen to my job'. Not, 'If I stop to help the sanitation workers what will happen to all of the hours that I usually spend in my office every day and every week as a pastor?' The question is not, 'If I stop to help this man in need, what will happen to me?' The question is, 'If I do not stop to help the sanitation workers, what will happen to them?' That’s the question.
Let us rise up tonight with a greater readiness. Let us stand with a greater determination. And let us move on in these powerful days, these days of challenge to make America what it ought to be. We have an opportunity to make America a better nation. And I want to thank God, once more, for allowing me to be here with you."
We must always remember to keep our fellow man and woman in mind, to fight along them for what is right - not just for us - but for the other.
