The Family Homeschool Alliance Lady Knights volleyball teams have already been busy this week. On Monday they traveled to Harvester Christian Academy in Douglasville and then on Tuesday they were in Emerson to face off against Excel Christian Academy. On Monday the JV fell to the Hawks of Harvester 0-2. Rebekah Langston and Hannah Ii continued their strong play in the losing cause. The varsity match saw the Lady Knights falling 0-3 to a strong Harvester club. Cali Wilcox led the way offensively logging 4 kills and Hannah Pate led the way on defense with 17 serve receptions and 8 digs before having to leave the match due to injury. (Side note, thank you to everyone that prayed for Hannah, she is fine but a little sore. Okay, a lot sore.)

On Tuesday the JV fell 0-2 in a close match. Once again the young Knights were led by Hannah Ii and Rebekah Langston. Gretchen Hester also made some key plays for the Knights. The varsity emerged victorious, winning 3-0. Morgan Froelke led the way with 6 kills, 2 aces, and 3 assists. The Lady Knights were carried by strong serving as Cali Wilcox finished with 15 aces, Sarah Redenz and Rebekah Langston both contributed 6 aces, and Abigail Langston had 3 aces of her own.

Some stories of 9/11 begin with tragedy. Some stories show us what can grow from it.

Hanna Born was almost 3 years old. Her baby sister, Heather, was just 4 months old. On September 11, 2001, they were at the Pentagon Child Development Center when American Airlines Flight 77 slammed into the Pentagon.

In the chaos that followed, service members rushed to the daycare and carried the children to safety. They carried cribs filled with babies and toddlers and moved them away from the burning Pentagon.

Hanna has memories of that day—the confusion, the sirens, the smoke and the overwhelming sights and sounds. Heather was too young to remember.
But neither sister forgot what others did for them that day.

Twenty-five years later, the two little girls who were carried to safety have grown into women who chose to serve their country. Hanna is now a U.S. Air Force captain and helicopter instructor pilot. Heather is now a U.S. Marine Corps officer.

Their story reminds me that sometimes the light we find in the darkness doesn't end when the darkness does. Sometimes it becomes a part of who we are.

Two little girls were carried out of the darkness that day. Now they are two women who have chosen to be a light for others.

That is worth remembering.

In tragedy, there is light.

On September 11, 2001, the United States made the unprecedented decision to close its airspace.
Thirty-eight international flights carrying nearly 7,000 passengers were diverted to the small town of Gander, Newfoundland, Canada.

Think about that for a moment.
A town of about 10,000 people suddenly had thousands of frightened strangers who had nowhere to go. And Gander opened its doors. They fed them. They found them places to sleep. They opened their homes. They gave them clothes.
They helped them call their families.
They cared for people from all over the world—people they had never met and might never see again.
They didn't ask who they were.
They didn't ask what they believed.
They didn't ask what they could give in return. They simply saw people who needed help and said, “How can we help?”

In one of the darkest moments in our history, a little town in Newfoundland showed the world what compassion looks like.

In tragedy, there is light.

I want my children to remember that part of the story, too. Because when the world feels dark, there will always be people who choose to be the light.

25 years later, we remember the survivors.

Ron DiFrancesco was working on the 84th floor of the South Tower when United Flight 175 struck the building below him.

He was knocked down. The building was filling with smoke. He was injured, disoriented, and surrounded by unimaginable destruction.
But somehow, Ron got up.

He made his way down the stairs through smoke and darkness. At one point, he was overcome and collapsed—but he kept fighting to get out.

Ron eventually made it outside.
He was the last known person to escape the South Tower from above the impact zone.

I can't watch his story without thinking about how many people were faced with an impossible choice that morning: Do I keep going?

Ron did.

Twenty-five years later, his story reminds us that sometimes survival is simply finding enough strength for one more step.

They were strangers when the morning began.

Stanley Praimnath was trapped in the South Tower after the plane struck his building.

Brian Clark heard him calling for help.

Brian found Stanley buried beneath the debris and pulled him free.

Then the two men—complete strangers—made their way down 81 floors together.

They survived.

Twenty-five years later, they still call each other family.

I love this story because it reminds me that sometimes the person who changes your life is someone you have never met.

On one of the darkest days in our history, a stranger reached out his hand and said, in essence, I'm getting you out of here.

And he did.

Sometimes the light doesn't come until you're buried in the darkness.
Genelle Guzman-McMillan was working on the 64th floor of the North Tower when the building collapsed.

She was trapped beneath the rubble.
For hours, she lay there—unable to move, surrounded by darkness and debris.

And then, more than 27 hours after the tower collapsed, rescuers heard her.

They found her.

Genelle was the last known survivor rescued from Ground Zero.
Her story is difficult to comprehend. But it is also a story of hope.
Of refusing to give up.
Of rescuers who kept searching.
Of a woman who somehow held on.

Twenty-five years later, I want my children to know that even in the darkest moments, hope can still be found.

Flight 93 - They Fought Back

The passengers aboard United Flight 93 began learning what had happened to the other hijacked planes. They realized their plane wasn't simply being hijacked. It was being turned into a weapon. And they made a choice. They could have stayed in their seats and hoped someone else would stop it.

Instead, ordinary people—mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, husbands, wives, friends, and strangers—decided they were going to fight back. They knew the odds. They knew they might not survive. But they also knew that if they did nothing, innocent people on the ground could die.

So they stood together. They fought.
And Flight 93 never reached the hijackers' intended target.

We will never know exactly how many lives their actions saved.

But we know this:
They gave everything they had to stop their plane from becoming a weapon against their fellow Americans.

Twenty-five years later, I want my children to know their story. I want them to know that courage isn't always loud. Sometimes it is simply a group of ordinary people deciding, “We have to try.”

“Why should we look back and remember 9/11?”
This is the question I got from my very grumpy 11-year-old son.

I told him that it’s important to remember that our country is not untouchable. Terrible things can happen, even here. We should never take our freedom, our safety, or the people around us for granted.

But I also told him that there is another reason we remember.
Because when our country was attacked, we saw ordinary people do extraordinary things.

Men and women who ran toward the danger instead of away from it. People who helped complete strangers. People who gave everything they had to save someone else. People who looked at an impossible situation and somehow made the impossible a reality.

This video always makes me cry. Not just because of the tragedy, but because of the incredible courage and humanity it represents.

I want my children to know the whole story. To remember the lives that were lost, the families who were changed forever, and the evil that caused it—but also to remember the courage, compassion, sacrifice, and unity that followed.
I love our country. 🇺🇸

And I hope my children grow up knowing that remembering isn’t about living in the past. It’s about carrying the lessons of the past with us into the future.

Twenty-five years later, we remember Betty Ong.

Betty was a flight attendant aboard American Airlines Flight 11.
On the morning of September 11, 2001, after the plane was hijacked, Betty picked up an Airfone and called American Airlines.

She told them what was happening.
The cockpit wasn't answering. People had been stabbed. The passengers and crew couldn't breathe. She reported what she knew and stayed on the phone, calmly relaying information from that plane as the terrible events unfolded.

She wasn't calling because she knew what was going to happen.
She was calling because she knew someone needed to know.

Her call became one of the first warnings to authorities that America was under attack. And then Flight 11 became the first plane to strike the World Trade Center.

Betty was 45 years old.

Twenty-five years later, I want to remember her by name—not just as a victim of 9/11, but as a woman who, in the middle of unimaginable terror, stayed calm, picked up the phone, and did what she could to help.
