Beneath the surface of our planet lies a dynamic and complex world that powers everything from earthquakes to volcanic eruptions. Earth is made up of four main layers: the crust, mantle, outer core, and inner core, each with its own unique properties and functions. Understanding these layers reveals the hidden forces shaping our planet every day.
The crust is the thin, solid outer shell of Earth, fractured into tectonic plates that drift atop the semi-fluid mantle. Slow-moving convection currents within the mantle push and pull these plates, giving rise to mountains, earthquakes, and continental drift. The mantle itself, though solid, flows over millions of years, acting as the engine that drives the planet’s surface dynamics.
Beneath the mantle lies the outer core, a molten layer composed primarily of iron and nickel. Its swirling currents generate Earth’s magnetic field, a protective shield that keeps harmful solar radiation at bay. At the very center of our planet sits the inner core, a solid sphere of iron and nickel with temperatures comparable to the Sun’s surface. Despite being solid, it slowly grows as the outer core cools, continuing the cycle of energy and movement that fuels Earth’s magnetic field and interior processes.
