The CAF WASP Squadron is a Commemorative Air Force member driven 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to honoring the Women Airforce Service Pilots of World War II – America’s first female military aviators – by inspiring the next generation to defy expectations and achieve success. The group’s educational outreach programs provide young people, especially young women, a greater appreciation of their own potential, an awareness of the opportunities that surround them, and a mentorship pathway to accomplish their dreams.

If you’ve ever seen Nella the AT-6 Texan in person, hopefully, you got a peek at her luggage compartment to see what was left behind by several Women Airforce Service Pilots.

Although she was flown by WASP during their training at Avenger Field in 1943-1944, Nella has had the privilege of flying several more WASP during her tenure as the aircraft of the CAF WASP Squadron. When one of these special guests has taken a flight, each signed her name in the aircraft’s luggage compartment making this “museum without walls” a truly remarkable, one-of-a-kind artifact. ✈️

✈️ TULSA, OKLAHOMA - Nella is coming your way!

Nella the AT-6 Texan is headed to the Tulsa Air and Space Museum (TASM), October 23–25!

This historic aircraft was flown by the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) at Avenger Field in Sweetwater, Texas, during WWII. While Nella's ties to the WASP make her unique, she also offers a rare opportunity to experience what WWII pilots experienced during their training. The AT-6 is known as "The Pilot Maker."

Climb into history. Hear the engine roar. Step into the shoes of a WWII pilot in training. Honor the WASP.

✈ WASP Spotlight: Mildred "Mickey" Tuttle Axton 43-W-7 - The first woman to fly a B-29.

On May 4, 1944, according to Boeing Aircraft archives, she was one of the crew of nine aboard "Sweet Sixteen" the 16th of 1,644 B-29s rolled out from the Wichita plant.

Mickey's account of that day:

"I was back in the aft flight blister when Elton Rowley (chief of engineering flight test) called back over the intercom and said, 'Micky, how'd you like to come and fly this thing?' I was absolutely in hog heaven!" she recalled.

"So I put my parachute on my back and crawled through the tunnel which was over the bomb bay to the front. He gave me the left seat and I flew the plane." Axton said.

"The problem was, it was so top secret, I could only tell my husband."
