DALLAS, TX – The MediaTech Student Showcase returned to the historic Texas Theatre last night, screening 3 short films, 2 documentaries, commercials and music videos (and a partridge in a pear tree – sorry!) The music video, “It’s Going Down” by artist Marcellas kicked the evening off. The docs were very strong, from Jaquae Ammonds’ “Make Him Proud,” detailing a barber’s personal struggles, to Theresa “Tess” Seidlitz’s conflicted account of her great, great, great uncle, Walther von Seydlitz, a German WWII commander who defied Hi**er, was captured by the Soviets and then defied Stalin. The witty commercials provided levity for the evening, while the 3 dramatic shorts kept the audience on their toes and in knots. Online student, Kameron Barry’s tense thriller, “The Forgotten Bag,” with frequent MTI actor, Pharoah Dismuke repeatedly jogging past the same mysterious bag, leads to a bloody encounter; while Devon Pope, an online student traveling from Houston, premiered “I, The Witch Hunter,” based on the historic burning at the stake of woman accused of witchcraft. Wrapping up the evening was “Lina”, director/writer Joce Retana’s sophisticated tale of the legacy of abuse upon twin ballet dancers from childhood to adulthood. With some editing tricks and cleverly planned cinematography, the actresses Asa Woo and Loryn Martin played each twin as adult and child respectively, in a tale of twin trickery that might make William Shakespeare proud! Expertly shot by Jaquae Ammons and with an original score by Jason Harden and a detailed production design by Keona Smith, Joce Retana, and Tess Seidlitz, “Lina” provided a cathartic gut punch to end the evening. MediaTech Film Dept Chair, Eric Jewell, along with the other film teachers, had much to celebrate along with their students!
