At PicScience, we believe mathematics builds confidence, but confidence grows best in an environment where children feel loved, supported, and encouraged.

Since 2022, our partnership with Hawk-Houston Youth Enrichment Center, powered by Grove Community Outreach, Inc., has provided exactly that.

When we began this summer's math camp, many of our students were new. The first few days challenged all of us as we worked to build trust, routines, and relationships. The Hawk-Houston staff encouraged us not to be discouraged, reminding us that the children simply needed time to adjust.

They were right.

By the end of the week, those same students were laughing, learning, collaborating, and growing together.

One conversation with Rev. Norris Danzey has stayed with me throughout the summer. We agreed that there are no bad children. Some children simply need more patience, more grace, more guidance, and adults who refuse to give up on them.

That philosophy is woven into everything Hawk-Houston does. Through arts, music, STEM enrichment, mentorship, leadership opportunities, and exposure to successful community leaders and Hawk-Houston alumni, they help children see possibilities far beyond what they may have imagined for themselves.

Thank you to Executive Director Altha Newman, the Hawk-Houston staff, the Foster Grandparents, and every team member who welcomed PicScience into your family once again. Your encouragement, partnership, and commitment helped make this year's program and the 2nd Annual Dothan Community Math Tournament a tremendous success.

Thank you for reminding us that when a community surrounds children with love, patience, and opportunity, they don't just learn mathematics, they learn to believe in themselves. 💙📚➗

🌟 PicScience 2025–2026 Intern Spotlight: Tiyana Belle 🌟

At PicScience, we believe in investing in tomorrow's leaders, and Tiyana Belle is a wonderful example of that mission in action.
Throughout her internship, Tiyana consistently supported our programs with enthusiasm, professionalism, and a heart for service. She played a key role in developing our scholarship database and creating a newsletter template that will continue to benefit PicScience and the students and families we serve.

We're especially proud to celebrate Tiyana as she enters her senior year while pursuing Pre-Nursing through Wallace Community College-Dothan and Dothan Virtual School. Her dedication to academics, service, and helping others reflects the qualities of an exceptional future healthcare professional.

Congratulations, Tiyana! Thank you for your hard work, your servant's heart, and the lasting impact you've made at PicScience. We are incredibly proud of you and can't wait to see all that you'll accomplish in the years ahead.

💜 A Heartfelt Thank You to the Grove Community Outreach Board of Directors 💜

As we reflect on another successful PicScience: Fractions for Beginners Summer Math Camp and the 2nd Annual Dothan Community Math Tournament, I want to take a moment to recognize three incredible leaders whose unwavering support continues to make opportunities like this possible.

Thank you to Patricia Fair, Vivian Mincy Cole, and Dr. Page Jones for believing in the vision of investing in the children of the Wiregrass.

Throughout this journey, we've witnessed something research continues to affirm: children thrive when families, educators, and communities work together to create meaningful learning experiences. Confidence grows when students are surrounded by adults who encourage them, believe in their potential, and provide opportunities to learn in environments where they feel supported.

This summer, we welcomed a brand-new group of students. Before they could master fractions, greatest common factors, and equivalent fractions, they needed to know they belonged. They needed caring adults who believed in them, encouraged them to persevere, and created a space where asking questions and making mistakes were simply part of learning.
That kind of environment doesn't happen by accident.

It happens because of leaders who understand that educational success is built through strong community partnerships and a shared commitment to our children.

Introducing Our Team

As we wrap up this summer program and tournament, we want to honor the incredible team who poured into our students with love, patience, and purpose.

Sydney Brackin – also known as Mr. Syd – is a program leader with PicScience Math Made Simple and a key supporter at Hawk Houston Youth Enrichment Center. He guides students from elementary through college, helping them grow in math, confidence, and professional readiness. His work is rooted in service, faith, and a deep desire to see young people thrive.

Brooke Tinsley – a summer program instructor and Early Childhood Education major at UAB, worked with 4th–6th grade students, creating engaging learning activities that kept students motivated and excited to learn. She finds joy in building a welcoming environment and seeing students shine when they master something new.

Keirsten Saulsberry – a PicScience co-teacher and junior staff member at Hawk-Houston Youth Enrichment Center- leads math intervention for students in grades 3–6. Alongside her team, she tutors weekly at the Youth Enrichment Center, supporting young learners as they build the skills and confidence needed for their future.

Together, this team has planted seeds of knowledge, encouragement, and growth. Thank you for serving our students with such care and heart. We are grateful for your dedication and the lasting impact you are making in Southeast Alabama.

Sometimes the greatest victories aren't measured by trophies or medals.

They're measured by the confidence a child gains when they realize, "I can do this."

The 2nd Annual Dothan Community Math Tournament was more than a competition. It was a celebration of perseverance, teamwork, courage, and growth. Watching our students confidently solve problems, encourage one another, and celebrate each other's success reminded us why this work matters.
