School rules remain in effect for park use, not limited to tobacco/alcohol/vaping prohibited, appropriate social interactions, etc. Please park in the high school parking lot & walk through the wisteria tunnel to enter. Please plan ahead for restroom use, as bathrooms are not available to the public at this time unless specified for events. RISK: Stepping onto the property of Outdoor Learning Lab, you assume all liability. The nature of the park promotes a healthy incorporation of risk in play through loose parts and open-ended play. The area is intended for children of diverse ages and capabilities - every area may not be suitable for every child and depends on their abilities. Adult supervision is required at all times to help provide discretion as children learn, grow, explore, and take risks. Here is to letting kids grow through risk: "The more risks you allow your children to make, the better they learn to look after themselves." Roald Dahl

"Children learn to manage, control, and even overcome their fears by taking risks. -A. Hanscom

One thing all of our elementary students will be working on is improving their attention span! The ability to be bored without the brain interpreting it as an emergency that requires rescue is a skill that has to be practiced. Being outside is a great way to build this skill!

This year we are practicing Sit Spots as part of student time outside. Students pick a place in the outdoors and get to know it by making observations, remembering details, and simply sitting in the space for a designated time. Spending time in nature allows for the brain to relax while still having environmental input in a process called soft fascination and focus recovery. Studies have shown that this kind of activity can boost a brain's ability to direct focus on things like reading, math, and active listening!

We are back! A new school year has begun, and we are so excited to continue getting our students learning out in nature! This year our elementary students will be having regularly occurring days outside with Mrs. Shireman and Mrs. Hargrave 🌱

We have been working to clear the giant ragweed from our orchard rows. If you would like to help us with this project, or others, please reach out to us!

When visiting the OLL please ensure that trash is picked up and any maintenance issues are reported to us by messaging here on Facebook or emailing [email protected]
Thanks!

Notice a change in the Lab?

After the severe weather we had this summer, we decided it was time to safely bring down some of our big trees that had died or were on their way out. But don’t worry - this made room for some of our smaller trees to reach their full potential!

Even in the heat, the excitement in nature never stops! Every week in July, the Outdoor Learning Lab is inviting students from Huffer Memorial Children's Center in Muncie on field trips to explore the space, eat some pizza, and appreciate nature. Here are some pictures from the first two field trips.
